Fall Tennis Nears an End for WAC Women's Tennis

WAC WOMENS TENNIS NOTEBOOK

PLAYER OF THE MONTH SMU senior Jenny Langer has been named Octobers Western Athletic Conference womens tennis player of the month.
Langer, a Louisville, Ky., native is 8-4 this fall. Langer advanced to the semifinals at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional in College Station, Texas. She ended the regional with a solid 4-1 record. She had a victory over No. 58 and WAC rival Blair DiSesa of Rice along the way. She is ranked No. 100 individually in fall ITA rankings.

OTHERS NOMINATED Fresno States Lucia Santz reached the doubles finals of the Saint Marys Invitational in early October with partner Courtney Jantz before the tournament was abandoned due to rain. She also reached the quarterfinals of singles at Saint Marys Boise States Carolina Pongratz played in two tournaments in October. Her overall record for October was 6-3 Rices Blair DiSesa went 4-3 during October. She played three top-65 players, going 1-2. As the eighth seed, advanced to the quarterfinals at the Wilson ITA Southwest Regional Championship Tulsas Daniela Muscolino is 8-6 this fall and 2-2 against ranked opponents. Muscolino won five-straight matches at the Wilson/ITA Regional Championship, losing in the finals to Nebraskas Gitta Osterman.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HONOLULU This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on the campus of the University of Hawaii, April 21-24. The 2004 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its third-straight title.

RICE ENDS FALL WITH A BANG Three Owls posted tennis singles victories on the final day of the Midwest Blast VI at the University of Illinois Atkins Tennis Center, finishing the fall season for the Rice women.Senior Tracie Chong led the way for the Owls, defeating the Illinis Emily Wang 6-4, 6-1. The win brings Chongs fall record to 9-7. Rookie Kimberley Patenaude won her match against Illinois Momei Qu, 6-2, 7-6, while freshman Christine Dao defeated Brianna Knue of Illinois, 6-4, 6-3. In doubles action, Blair DiSesa and Dao teamed up for an 8-6 victory over South Alabamas Dijana Stanic and Dominika Nemcovicova.

MUSCOLINA FALLS AT NATIONAL INDOORS Junior Daniela Muscolino Tulsa's Daniela Muscolino dropped her first two matches at the 2004 National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Michigan at the UM Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. Muscolino lost her first match on Thursday, Nov. 4, to Suzi Babos (California), in three sets, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2. In the first round of competition in the consolations draw, Muscolino dropped her match to Jennifer Magley (Florida), in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (5). Muscolino's play in the tournament wraps up the fall competition for the Golden Hurricane women's team. They will return to action in January.

HAWAII RETURNS HOME After two brief mainland stints, Hawaii continues early-season tournament play, this time playing host to the first-ever Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational, beginning Thursday, Nov. 11, at the newly renovated UH Tennis Complex. With some of the top collegiate womens tennis teams in the country competing in the event, Hawaii is hoping to make a positive impression early in the season. Competing in this weeks tournament are No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 39 Arizona, and Texas State. Arizona features the No. 1 ranked doubles team in Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands. Hollands is also currently ranked No. 7 in singles.Hawaii has been led in singles play by senior Kimberly Curtis, who played her way into the main draw of the ITA Western Regional Championships on Oct. 21, and has posted an overall record of 2-4 in tournament play. Fellow seniors Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor have excelled on the doubles side, heading into the Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational with a 2-2 season record.
