Two WAC Runners Place in the Top 25 at NCAA Cross Country Championships

Forest Braden of Boise State and Karin van Rooyen of SMU, both earned top 25 finishes at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. This year's event was hosted by Indiana State at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. Braden finished 24th with a time of 31:31.7 in the 10k race. van Rooyen earned another top 25 finish, taking 17th in 20:59 for the 6k race. The SMU women, who were the lone team to compete at the event for the WAC, placed 22nd with 519 points.

    NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS

    The NCAA Division I Mens and Womens Track and Field Committee announced the team and individual qualifiers for the 2004 Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions. Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals, the first four from each region whose teams did not advance to the championships race, and two additional qualifiers, were selected to participate in each championship. All individual qualifiers must finish in the top 25 in their region.

    NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

    Indiana State University will host the 2004 NCAA Division I Mens and Womens Cross Country Championships, November 22, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's race will begin at 11 a.m. (ET) time followed by the mens race at 12:15 p.m.

    The SMU womens cross country team pooled their talent to claim the 2004 NCAA South Central Regional title, beating second place Arkansas by 11 points. This marks the first time the Mustang women have ever won a South Central Regional title. Senior standout Karin van Rooyen demonstrated her competitiveness in her final regional cross country race. She finished in 20:12 with one of the top regional times in the nation. Van Rooyen was edged at the line by first place finisher Mary Kinyanjui of TCU. Van Rooyen has never finished the regional race lower than second place in her career as a Mustang.

    The Rice mens team was less than 15 points shy of an NCAA team berth as they finished third at the NCAA South Central Regionals at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. Led by WAC champion Marcel Hewamudalige, the Owls placed three in the top-10 to finish behind Arkansas and Texas, respectively, as a team. Hewamudalige was the top Owl finisher, as he has been all season, placing third overall.

    UTEP junior Mircea Bogdan earned a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships by taking second at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Fort Collins, Colo. Freshman Stephen Samoei will joining Bogdan at the championships. Bogdan was edged in the 10k race by New Mexicos Matt Gonzales, who is expected to be the favorite at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Gonzales crossed in 29:45.1 and Bogdan finished in 29:47.4.

    SMU, RICE TAKE HOME CROSS COUNTRY TITLES
    The 2004 WAC Cross Country Championship was held Oct. 30 at Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston, La., with the Rice men and SMU women taking home the team titles at 27 and 30 points, respectivley. The men started the day, with the Owls winning their first team title since 2001. Junior Marcel Hewamudalige earned top honors posting a time of 24:57.13, becoming the first Owl to win individual honors. The title earned Hewamudalige 2004 WAC Athlete of the Year honors. For the women Kate Gorry of Rice took home the title and was named WAC Athlete of the Year, in a time of 17:01.59.

    On the mens side, Rice scored 27 points to finish ahead of 2003 champion, Tulsa, which had 79 points. In third place was UTEP with a total of 80 points, while Boise State finished fourth with 96 points. Rounding out the mens field was host, Louisiana Tech, which registered 102 points and San Jose State which was sixth at 153. After champion Hewamudalige, was 2003 champion, Mircea Bogdan of UTEP who posted a time of 24:57.99. In third was Forest Braden of Boise State with a time of 24:58.60. The title for the Rice men earned head coach Jon Warren Coach of the Year.

    On the womens side, SMU scored 30 points, out-distancing Rice which finished second with 88 points. Mustangs head coach John Rembao was named WAC Coach of the Year for his teams effort. In third was UTEP with 97 points. Taking fourth place was Nevada with 121 points, edging Hawaii which had 122 points. Rounding out the field for the women were, Boise State (141), San Jose State, (162), Fresno State (172), and Tulsa with 173. Louisiana Tech did not score.
