DENVER San Jose State forward Marquin Chandler has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for November 22-28.
Chandler, a senior from Oakland, Calif. (George Washington), averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds as San Jose State won both of its games last week. Chandler scored 18 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked a school-record six shots in a 65-64 win over Montana State. He scored the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds remaining. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Spartans. Chandler then scored 26 points, including the eight of the teams final 10, in a 71-70 win at San Diego. The victory broke a 14-game road losing streak for San Jose State. It was the Spartans first win on the road since Feb. 15, 2003. It is Chandlers first career WAC Player of the Week award.
The other nominations were senior center Mustafa Al-Sayyad, Fresno State; junior center Chris Botez, Hawaii; sophomore forward Paul Millsap, Louisiana Tech; senior forward Patrick Simpson, SMU; and senior forward/guard Omar Thomas, UTEP.
