DENVER Nevada forward Nick Fazekas has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for February 9-15.
Fazekas, a freshman from Arvada, Colo. (Ralston Valley HS), averaged 26.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as Nevada beat both Boise State and UTEP last week. Against Boise State, he scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He followed that up against UTEP with 32 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and two steals as the Pack beat the Miners, 92-63. The points and rebounds were career-highs while the blocks tied his career-best. For the week, he was 20-of-30 (.667) from the field, 3-of-4 (.750) from three-point range and 10-of-13 (.769) from the line. It is Fazekas first ever WAC Player of the Week award and second for a Nevada player this year.
The other nominations were junior forward Jason Ellis, Boise State; senior guard Shantay Legans, Fresno State; senior guard Michael Kuebler, Hawaii; junior forward Wayne Powell, Louisiana Tech; junior guard Jason McKrieth, Rice; and sophomore guard Bryan Hopkins, SMU.
