There have been a few teams in competition this spring. The Mustangs are off to a hot start behind the play of Laura Cross. The freshman led SMU to the Miccosukee Championship, taking first. SJSU's Ashley Gomes became the first San Jose State women's golfer to win a tournament in four seasons, taking home gold at the Bay Area Classic.     GOLFER OF THE WEEK Julie Tvede, a senior from Grentofte, Denmark, had her second-best career finish and her third top-five performance at the Northrop Grunman Regional Challenge. She carded even-par 71s in the first two rounds and scored a final round 75 to finish in a second-place tie with a 54-hole total of four-over par 217 in the field of 80 golfers.

    SMU WINS MICCOSUKEE CHAMPIONSHIP SMU made up a 14-shot deficit Feb. 17 to capture the Miccosukee Championship in Miami, Fla. SMU trailed Florida Atlantic by 14 strokes after 36 holes of play. The Ponies won the tournament by one stroke, outlasting FAU with a final team score of 936 (+60). The SMU victory is the team's second tournament win of the season. The Mustangs captured first at the Battle at the Lake Invite on Oct. 7. Freshman Laura Cross led wire-to-wire to win her second individual medallist trophy of the season. The Midlothian, Texas native finished the tournament with a 224 (+5), four strokes ahead of second place. Cross finished the tournament first in par three scoring, first in total pars, first in total birdies, second in par four scoring and second in par five scoring. Fellow freshman Ashley Deatherage finished in a tie for second four strokes behind Cross with a 228 (+9) including the team's best round, a two over-par 75 on the par 73, 6,099 yard course.

    GOMES WINS BAY AREA CLASSIC Ashley Gomes became the first San Jose State women's golfer in four years to win a college tournament with a final round even par 72 at the 2004 Bay Area Classic at the Boulder Ridge Golf Course. Gomes, a senior from Pleasanton, posted the best individual round score of the 36-hole tournament at the par 72, 6,069-yard course. She began the final 18 holes with birdies on the first two holes and added birdies on #8 and #16 to offset a pair of bogeys and a double bogey. Her 36-hole total of 152 was two strokes better than the 154 by Washingtons Amber Prange. Only eight players in the 72-player field posted a score in the 70s. Gomes score was five strokes better than all others during the final 18 holes.

    ADLETA NAMED AS INTERIM HEAD COACH Hawaii Athletics Director Herman Frazier appointed Ashley Adleta (pronounced ad-LEE-tah) as the interim women's golf coach effective January through June 2004. Adleta began her collegiate career at Pepperdine where she played two seasons and won the Wyoming Invitational. She completed her final two collegiate seasons at Arizona State under its legendary coach Linda Vollstedt, who recently retired in 2001. Adleta was a part of five national championship teams - two as a player at ASU and the other three as an assistant coach. Adleta graduated from ASU in spring 1994 with a B.A. degree in political science and played that following fall as an amateur on the Players' West Min-Tour, which is now called the Futures Tour. The former Sun Devil became an assistant women's coach at ASU from 1995-2001 before taking a job as an administrative assistant with her father's company, Adleta Corporation.

    WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN EL PASO The 2004 WAC Tournament will be held Apr. 19-21 in El Paso, Texas, at the Underwood Golf Course. Tulsa is looking for a WAC record sixth-straight titles, after picking up number five in 2003 in Honolulu. Tulsas Julie Tvede is back looking to defend her title.
