SMU WINS TULANE INVITE SMU overcame cold and rainy weather to win its first tournament of the 2003-04 season at the Nokia Tulane Invitational. The tournament was held at English Turn Golf & CC. The Mustangs posted a final round 302 (+4, 868) to win by two strokes over Wake Forest (+6, 870). Wake Forest entered the tournament ranked No. 14 in the nation. The Mustangs held off the charging Wake Forest squad with the leadership of junior captain Scott Abbott who fired a team best 74 (+2) to finish tied for sixth. Abbott was joined by freshman Dan Kleckner whose final round 75 gave him a team best finish for the week at 216 (E). Sophomore Will Dodson, who was in third after the first 36 holes, shot a final round 78 to finish alone in fifth. Freshman Colt Knost finished 12th with a 223 (+7) after struggling with an 80. Jerad Harklau rounded out the winning SMU effort finishing in a tie for 13th with a 224 (+8) for the tournament. SMU's win was the team's sixth tournament victory since October of 2002.
