DENVER San Jose States Ashley Gomes has been selected as the Western Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week.
Gomes, a senior from Pleasanton, Calif., picked up her first major college tournament victory winning the 2004 Bay Area Classic in San Jose. Hosted by the University of San Francisco at the Boulder Ridge Golf Club, Gomes had rounds of 80 and 72 for a 152 in the 73-player field. The final round 72 was the lowest score in the tournament and one of only eight scores under 80 the last day of competition. She had four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on a day when the wind blew windshields off of golf carts. She is the first San Jose State golfer in four years to finish first individually in a sanctioned college golf tournament.
