DENVER Hawaii catcher Matthew Inouye and Rice right-handed pitcher Wade Townsend have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 16-22.
Inouye, a sophomore from Honolulu (Mid-Pacific Institute), was 9-for-15 (.600) with nine RBI and four runs scored in four wins for the Rainbows last week. Inouye had three three-RBI games and added two doubles to up his WAC-leading total to eight on the season. In Saturdays 15-3 win over Hawaii-Hilo, Inouye was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
It is Inouyes first career WAC Player of the Week award.
Townsend, a junior from Dripping Springs, Texas (Dripping Springs HS), recorded a win and a save in two appearances last week. He pitched 1.1 innings in relief against Houston and allowed no hits or walks in picking up the save. Townsend then pitched eight innings in a 9-2 win over Cal State Northridge on Saturday and gave up just five hits and three walks. For the week, he struck out 11 in 9.1 innings and had an ERA of 1.93.
It is Townsends fourth career WAC Pitcher of the Week award.
Other player of the week nominations included: junior outfielder Gil Laird, Louisiana Tech; and senior center fielder Chris Kolkhorst, Rice.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: freshman Steven Wright, Hawaii; junior Clayton Meyer, Louisiana Tech; and junior Matt Durkin, San Jose State.
