Nevada Women Lead Day One of WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship

NAMPA, Idaho The 2004 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship began today from Nampa, Idaho, hosted by Boise State. Day one consisted of the multi events, including the womens pentathlon and the mens heptathlon. Nevadas Maranda Brownson brought home the championships first gold, taking the womens pentathlon title with 3,899 points. The mens heptathlon will conclude on Friday, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at noon. SMUs Josef Rous has the early lead with 2,868 points.

Nevada has the early team lead on the womens side, registering 14 points today. In second is Rice with nine points, while SMU is third at eight. UTEP (5) and Boise State (3) round out the field, respectively.

    Brownson, a junior from Yoncalla, Ore., earned 3,899 points winning one of the five events. She finished the day with two second, and two third-place finishes. Brownson, who finished fourth in 2003, earned a second-place time of 8.94 in the 60-meter dash to open the event, registering 922 points. She tied two others for first in the high jump, clearing 1.67m (5-5.75) and grabbing 818 points. In the shot put, Brownson had a heave of 11.83m (38-9.75) giving her 650 points and third place. In the long jump, her distance of 5.65m was good for 744 and a 49 point lead going into the final event, the 800 meters. Brownson brought home the gold with her second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:24.39 and 765 points.

    Taking second was SMUs Franziska Lakomy, who tallied 3,834 points with a win in the long jump (5.73m). Rounding out the top three was Rices Ruthann Gairdner with 2,980 points.

    Taking titles in each of the five events for the women were; Gairdner in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.93; Brownson, Sofie Lundstrom of Boise State and Rices Flo Nwagwu all clearing 1.67m (5-5.75) in the high jump; Lundstrom with a heave of 13.66m (44-9.75) in the shot put; Lakomy won the days fourth event with a distance of 5.73m (18-9.75) in the long jump; and in the final event of the day, Nevadas Sara Prout won the 800m with a time of 2:22.50.

    For the men, SMUs Josef Rous has the lead through four events, winning the long jump and high jump, and taking third in the shot put.

    UTEPs Gilbert Ashdown won the first event of the day, the 60 meters, with a time of 7.24, earning him 799 points. Rous took the lead after the second event, winning the long jump with a distance of 6.98m (22-11). He tallied 809 points, giving him 1,528 through the two events. Rous kept the lead through three with a heave of 10.69m (35-1) in the shot put. His distance registered him 527 points. Tulsas Louis Dailey won the event with a throw of 11.69m (38-4.25), a point total of 588. In the high jump, the mens final even of the day, Rous cleared 2.01m (6-7) to take the title and grab 813 points.

    Rous stands in first through the first four events with a total of 2,868 points. In second is Dailey at 2,786, while Boise States Cordell Cochran is third, gathering 2,593 points on the day. Rous can become the first person other Rices Ryan Harlan to win this event in the past four years. Harlan set the WAC record last season at 4,058 points when he won his fourth-straight WAC pentathlon title.

    Competition continues Friday at 12:00 p.m., with the mens heptathlons final three events, the 60m, pole vault and 1,000m. Individual events begin at 4:30 with the mile and womens long jump. For complete coverage and results of the 2004 WAC Indoor Championship, visit wacsports.com.
