ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -Boise State's Jemima Hayward was named the Western Athletic Conference's women's tennis Player of the Week. Hayward, a senior from Aylesbury, England, was a perfect 3-0 in singles action at the Boise State Quad. Hayward won singles matches against Lewis and Clark College, No. 75 Cal State Northridge and Utah. She led the Broncos to 7-0 wins in all three dual matches. In her strongest singles match, Hayward defeated Cal State Northridge's Ana Matijasevic, 6-1, 6-0. She also had a 3-0 doubles record last week. Hayward and partner Erin Polowski lost only eight games in three matches.

OTHERS NOMINATED - Anabella Duque, Louisiana Tech and Yasmin Fisher, Rice.

NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE
Boise State -
The Broncos travels to Oregon this week to play three matches. First the team travels to Eugene to play Oregon on Friday, Feb. 6 and then Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 7. Then the Broncos will play Portland on Sunday, Feb. 8 before returning home to Boise. In the latest ITA rankings, Oregon is ranked 41st nationally and Minnesota is 40th.

Fresno State - Fresno State stayed at No. 20 while the men's team dropped one spot to No. 37 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The women are 1-0 after winning their opening dual match of the season 5-2 over No. 58 TCU. The Bulldogs have a very tough road ahead of them, however. Their next match comes Feb. 13 at No. 11 UCLA, which begins a string of seven consecutive matches against nationally ranked opponents, each coming away from Fresno. During the stretch, Fresno State also plays No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 California, No. 26 Tulane, No. 37 UNLV, No. 38 Oklahoma State and No. 42 Pepperdine.

Hawaii - Hawai'is's match against Santa Clara was cancelled, Monday, due to inclement weather in Northern California. The Rainbow Wahine return from its road trip with a 2-2 record, after posting victories at San Jose State and San Francisco.The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu, where they host UC Irvine and Gustavus Adolphus, Friday, Feb. 6. The matches are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex

Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters try to bounce back from three consecutive losses on Feb. 5 as it plays a 2 p.m. match at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Tennis Techsters stand at 1-4 with a home win over Grambling State and road losses to Rice, LSU, St. Louis and Arkansas-Little Rock. SFA is 0-1 on the season after dropping their season opener at home on Jan. 23 by the score of 4-3 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Nevada - After collecting its first win of the season against Weber State on Jan. 31, Nevada fell to New Mexico State on Feb. 1, 7-0 at the Feritta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas, Nev. The win takes Nevada to a 1-4 record, with all of its losses this season coming with 7-0 scores. Nevada next travels to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Utah State on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. and Utah on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m.

Rice - The 75th-ranked Rice women were handed their first loss of the season by 14th-ranked William & Mary, a 7-0 decision, in the championship match of the Minnesota Court Classic. The Owls, now 4-1 on the year, continue their road swing next weekend, facing 54th-ranked Florida State on Friday and 49th-ranked Louisiana State on Feb. 8.

San Jose State - The San Jose State University womens tennis team defeated Sonoma State, 5-4 on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd. Ana Lukner captured the number one singles match against Sonoma State player Brianna Bailey.

SMU - SMU dropped its second consecutive, falling to the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks, 5-2, in Fayetteville, Ark. despite a strong showing by sophomore Svetlana Kouzmenko. With the loss, SMU falls to 2-2 on the year. The Mustangs are next in action Tuesday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Ft. Worth to take on cross-town rival TCU.

UTEP - The Miners begin the 2004 season in San Antonio with matches against UT-San Antonion and UT-Pan American on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. The Miners also take on Texas State in San Marcos on Feb. 8.

Tulsa - The 50th-ranked Tulsa women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over conference rival SMU on Jan. 30. The Golden Hurricane are next in action Feb. 6-7 against Missouri and Southwest Missouri State, respectively.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Houston, Texas at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University, April 30-May 2. The 2003 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its third-straight title.
