Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week (Feb. 9)

DENVER Rices Stephen Magness and UTEPs Adriana Pirtea have been named the Western Athletic Conference mens and womens Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Magenss, a freshman from Spring, Texas, had a hand in accruing 20 points for the Owls in the teams third place finish. Won the 3,000 meters with the time of 8:23.23, almost five seconds ahead of the field. Also ran the 800 meter leg of the distance medley relay with the Owls winning in 10:13.00.

Pirtea, a junior from Bucharest, Romania, took the 3,000-meter title in a NCAA provisional time of 9:23.78 at the Husker Invitational. The time is the ninth fastest in the NCAA this season and third fastest in school history.

Additional mens nominees included: Kenny Johnson, Boise State; Einar Hjartarson, SMU; Henderson Dottin, UTEP and Louis Dailey, Tulsa.

Additional womens nominees included: Abbey Elsberry, Boise State; Jenny Moore, Fresno State; Kali Baker, Nevada; Funmi Jimoh, Rice and Shana Robinson, Tulsa.
