DENVER Nevada catcher Brett Hayes and right-handed pitcher Ryan Rodriguez have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 23-29.

Hayes, a sophomore from Woodland Hills, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), was 6-for-9 (.667) with six RBI and three runs scored in three games at the Battle at the Beach Tournament in Malibu, Calif., for the Wolf Pack last week. In Nevadas opening game against Brigham Young, Hayes was 3-for-3 with three runs and five RBI (including a grand slam) as the Pack won 13-0. He followed that up with another 3-for-3 performance to go along with one RBI and a stolen base against host Pepperdine. For the week, Hayes had a slugging percentage of 1.000.

It is Hayes second career WAC Player of the Week award and second for a Wolf Pack player this year.

Rodriguez, a freshman from Reno, Nev. (McQueen HS), pitched his first complete game and shutout of his career in a 2-0 victory over Cal State Northridge on Sunday. Rodriguez allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out 11. He retired the final 10 hitters of the game.

It is Rodriguezs first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award.

Other player of the week nominations included: senior shortstop Brian Finegan, Hawaii; junior shortstop Paul Janish, Rice; and second baseman/outfielder Kevin Frandsen, San Jose State.

Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: junior Ricky Bauer, Hawaii; and junior Philip Humber, Rice.
