DENVER Tulsas Katie Torres and Fresno States Jamie Southern have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Torres earned her first player of the week honor this year, while Southern has been honored twice. The Golden Hurricane have now earned both player pitcher of the week honors three times this season. Southern earned Pitcher of the Week honors three times last season and Player of the Week once.
Torres, a sophomore from Del City, Okla., (Del City), went 5-for-11 with a double and a homerun, for a .818 slugging percentage. She had a .538 on-base percentage on the weekend. The first baseman was 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks against Saint Louis. She recorded at least one hit in three of four games, earning all-tournament honors. Torres was perfect in 33 defensive chances as well, recording 29 putouts and four assists with no errors.
Southern, a junior from Clovis, Calif., (Clovis), was named all-tournament at the NFCA Leadoff Classic after posting a tournament-best 0.00 ERA. She earned three top 25 wins over No. 20 South Carolina, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 15 Texas. Opponents hit a paltry .097 against her as she allowed just seven hits in 22.0 innings. She struck out 28 for an average of 8.91 strikeouts per seven innings pitched. The junior made her 100th career appearance against the Sun Devils and recorded a win, becoming just the second Bulldog and third WAC pitcher overall to tally 800 career strikeouts.
