DENVER Nevada catcher Brett Hayes and Rice right-handed pitcher Jeff Niemann have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 8-14.

Hayes, a sophomore from Woodland Hills, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), hit .556 (10-18) with four runs scored and four RBI as Nevada went 3-1 last week. He had multiple hits in all four games with two 2-hit and two 3-hit games. His best game of the week came yesterday when he was 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, a double and a stolen base in a 14-6 win against Cal State Northridge.

It is Hayes third career WAC Player of the Week award and third for a Wolf Pack player this year.

Niemann, a junior from Houston (Lamar HS), started and pitched six shutout innings in Rices 10-0 victory at San Jose State on Saturday. Niemann allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out seven.

It is Niemanns fourth career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and second for an Owl this season.

Other player of the week nominations included: junior shortstop Gary Holik, Louisiana Tech; and junior third baseman Adam Morris, Rice.

Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: freshman Andrew Alsup, Louisiana Tech; and sophomore Travis Sutton, Nevada.
