GOLFER OF THE WEEK Tulsas Chris Noel has been selected as the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week.
Noel, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., finished in tie with fellow Golden Hurricane David Inglis for 16th place. He carded rounds of 78-72-66 for an even-par score of 216. His final round six-under 66 was the best round of the day in the tournament field of 81 golfers.
BOISE STATES DELAET WINS THIRD TOURNEY IN A ROW Boise State junior Graham DeLaet won his third tournament in as many tries this spring, taking home medalist honors at the Grand Canyon Invitational. DeLaet posted a -10 (206), defeating Joe Rathburn of CSU-San Marcos in extra holes to take home his Broncos record seventh career tournament. The Weyburn, SK Canada, native has won four tournaments in the 2003-04 year, taking home the Vandal Classic in the fall and the Highlander Classic and Diablo Grande this spring before this most recent win. He is ranked seventh in the nation by Golfstat in par 5 scoring at 4.53 and is currently ranked 43rd in the nation by Golfstat with a stroke average of 72.17.
BARYLA RANKED IN GOLFSTAT TOP 10 UTEP senior Chris Baryla, a Vernon, British Columbia native, is currently ranked ninth by the Golfstat rankings. He owns a 69.38 strokes per round average to lead the WAC. Baryla is one of four WAC golfers to have taken a title this year. Baryla won the Barona Cup in San Diego, firing a -17, 199 in October of 2003. Baryla finished the 2003 fall season ranked seventh by Golf Stat.
WAC TRIO AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN GOLFSTAT RANKINGS UTEPs Chris Baryla, Hawaiis Matthew Kodama and Boise States Graham DeLaet are all ranked in the top 10 in both the Golfstat rankings for par 5 scoring and subpar strokes per round. Baryla leads the nation in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.44 per hole. Kodama is third with an average of 4.51, while DeLaet is ninth, posting an average of 4.55 on the par 5s. Baryla is also ninth in the nation in par 4 scoring at 3.98 strokes. Kodama is second in the nation in subpar strokes per round at 4.92, while Baryla is sixth at 4.70, while DeLaet is seventh at 4.67. Fresno States Chad Spencer is fifth in the nation in total short game at .688, while San Jose States Bryant Reyes is ninth at .677.
As a team, UTEP is sixth in the nation shooting under par, averaging 3.42 subpar strokes per round. San Jose State leads the WAC and is ninth in the nation in greens in regulation at .652.
SMU WINS THIRD TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR SMU carded a final round 294 to win the 53rd annual Border Olympics at Laredo C.C. in Laredo, Texas. The Mustangs finished the tournament at 12 under-par to win their third tournament of the 2003-04 season and the teams second win in its last three starts. SMU finished seven strokes ahead of second place Baylor and ten strokes clear of third place BYU. The Mustangs were led by the play of Jerad Harklau who posted a final round 74 to finish tied for second at eight under-par. Harklaus 208 score was a career best for the Mustang sophomore. Fellow sophomore Will Dodson finished alone in ninth place after a final round 75. Dodson finished three under (213), including a second round 66.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO The 2004 WAC Tournament will be held May 3-5 in Fresno, Calif., at the San Joaquin Country Club. Host Fresno State is looking for back-to-back wins after taking home the 2003 title in Houston. Tulsa senior David Inglis will be looking for his fourth-straight individual championship. He already holds the WAC record with the three he previously captured.
