DENVER - SMUs Laura Cross and UTEPs Annie Mallory have been selected as the co-womens Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week.
Cross, a freshman from Midlothian, Texas, finished tied for third at eight over-par (224) at the Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. Cross fired a final round 78 to finish nine strokes back of the individual champion, Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum, who finished one under (215) for the tournament. As a team, the Mustangs took second, their sixth top three finish for 2003-04.
Mallory, a senior from Fredricton, New Brunswick, finished tied for third firing a three-day, 224 (+8). She tied with fellow WAC member, Laura Cross (SMU). Mallory shot back-to-back 74s to close out the tournament, her second best round of the season. The Miners finished tied for eighth in the event.
The 14th annual Western Athletic Conference womens golf championship begins today and runs through, Wednesday, April 21 at the Underwood Golf Course in El Paso, Texas. Tulsa is looking for a WAC record sixth straight-team title. The Golden Hurricane already hold the record, as they have won the past five, including five of six individual medalist honors. Senior Julie Tvede looks to become the third Hurricane to win back-to-back titles, taking home the 2003 honor with a nine-stroke win.
