DENVER Nevada first baseman Ben Mummy and Rice right-handed pitcher Wade Townsend have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 12-18.
Mummy, a junior from Edmonds, Wash. (Edmonds HS), was 6-for-12 (.500) in a three-game series against Fresno State last week. Mummy scored six runs and drove in seven in helping the Pack win two of three games. On Friday, he was 3-for-3 with four runs, five RBI and two doubles. In Sundays game, he was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.
It is Mummys second career WAC Player of the Week award and sixth for a Wolf Pack player this year.
Townsend, a junior from Dripping Springs, Texas (Dripping Springs HS), threw his first career complete-game in a 1-0 victory over San Jose State on Saturday. Townsend did not allow a hit until the eighth inning. He walked four, hit two batters, gave up two hits and struck out nine in the contest. He is now 8-0 with a 1.29 ERA on the year.
It is Townsends fifth career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and sixth for a Rice player this season.
Other player of the week nominations included: sophomore second baseman Isaac Omura, Hawaii; and junior shortstop Paul Janish, Rice.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: senior Clary Carlsen, Hawaii; junior Mitch Tucker, Louisiana Tech; sophomore Travis Sutton, Nevada; and sophomore Brandon Dewing, San Jose State.
