San Jose State's Gomes, SMU's Cross Qualify for Women's Golf NCAA Championship.

The 2004 WAC Player of the Year, Ashley Gomes of San Jose State and WAC Freshman of the Year, SMU's Laura Cross will both represent the WAC at the 2004 Women's Golf NCAA Championship. This year's NCAA Championship will be held at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala., May 18-21.

    The top eight teams in each region qualify for the NCAA Championship, while the top two individuals, not already quailifed with their team, also qualify.

    Gomes finished tied for eighth in the West Regional, giving her the NCAA nod. The senior first team all-WAC member tallied a three-day, 218 (+2) in Stanford, Calif. As a team, San Jose State tied for 15th with a 924. Hawaii's Sara Odelius made the West Regional as an individual, but finished tied for 25th with a 224 (+8).

    Cross finished tied for sixth in the Central Regional in Normal, Ill., placing her as the top individual qualifier. Cross, a first team all-WAC selection, posted a nine-over 222. The freshman fired rounds of one-over, even and a final round eight over to fall out of the top three. As a team, the Mustangs were edged by three strokes for the eighth and final bid for the NCAA Championship. SMU's 929 was three shots higher than Texas A&M's 926, who moved into the eighth spot on the final day.

    Tulsa, the 2004 WAC Champion, finished 21st in the Central Regional. Senior Julie Tvede was the top Golden Hurricane finisher, tying for 31st with a +19 (232).

    The 126 player field is set for the NCAA Championships, May 18-21. Eight teams and two individuals advanced from each region. The championship finals will be held at Grand National Lake Course, Opelika, Ala., hosted by Auburn University.
