SMU and UTEP's Chris Baryla qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, June 1-4, at the Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead Hot Springs, Va. Virgina Tech will play host for the event. SMU finished ninth with a team score of 909 in the Central Region. Baryla, the WAC's Player of the Year, tied for fourth, posting a final round 71 in the West Region.

WAC GOLFER OF THE WEEK Tulsas David Inglis has been selected as the mens Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week.
Inglis, a senior from Roslin, Scotland, carded rounds of 69-69-67 to tie Colorado's Kane Webber for first place with a five-under par 205 total in a field of 89 golfers at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Oklahoma. However, the Hurricane senior lost in a sudden death playoff on the first hole. The first-place performance was the third time this season and eighth time in his career that Inglis has placed first in a collegiate tournament. Inglis entered the final day four strokes behind Kane and Oklahoma's Doug Manor. Inglis began the final day with a 138 total and in seventh place.
THREE TEAMS, INDIVIDUALS TO COMPETE IN NCAA REGIONALS The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals that will participate in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. WAC Champion, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP will represent the WAC in Regionals. The WAC also boasts three individuals who will compete in the West Region, Chad Spencer of Fresno State, Graham DeLaet of Boise State and Hawaii's Matt Kodama.
UTEP will participate in the 2004 NCAA West Regional. The regional is slated for May 20-22 in Sunriver, Ore. Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort is the host course. The Miners will be appearing as a team in the regional for the second consecutive season following a two-year absence in 2001 and 2002. Overall UTEP is making its 13th regional showing.
Tulsa will compete in the Central Region as the ninth ranked team. The Golden Hurricane will play the Birck Boilmaker Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind., hosted by Purdue University. Tulsa finished second at the WAC Championship and were led by four-time WAC Champions David Inglis.
WAC Champion, SMU, will also compete in the Central Region as the 11th seeded team. The Mustangs earned the automatic bid by winning the Western Athletic Conference Championship on May 5 by 11 strokes in Fresno, Calif. It was SMU's first conference championship since 1988.
Boise State's Graham DeLaet Boise State Universitys top male golfer this season, will participate in the West Regional.Hawai`i's Matt Kodama and Fresno State's Chad Spencer will also play in the West Regional as individuals.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 20-22. A total of 27 teams and six individuals have been selected for each regional competition with 10 teams and two individuals advancing from each regional to the championships finals.
The championships will be conducted June 1-4 at Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is the host institution for this year's championships.
SMU WINS WAC MENS GOLF TITLE SMU won the 2004 WAC men's golf team championship on Wednesday afternoon after shooting a 1-over 285 in the third round at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif. The Mustangs beat second-place Tulsa by 11 strokes. Tulsa's David Inglis won the individual title after shooting a 2-under 69 to finish at 4-under for the tournament. It was Ingles' fourth consecutive WAC title. Ingles joins Texas' Justin Leonard as the only player in NCAA history to win his conference championship four years in a row.
BARYLA RANKED IN GOLFSTAT TOP 20 UTEP senior Chris Baryla, a Vernon, British Columbia native, is currently ranked 18th by the Golfstat rankings. He owns a 70.13 strokes per round average to lead the WAC. Baryla is one of four WAC golfers to have taken a title this year. Baryla won the Barona Cup in San Diego, firing a -17, 199 in October of 2003. Baryla finished the 2003 fall season ranked seventh by Golf Stat.
WAC TRIO AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN GOLFSTAT RANKINGS UTEPs Chris Baryla, Hawaiis Matthew Kodama and Boise States Graham DeLaet are all ranked in the top 10 in both the Golfstat rankings for par 5 scoring and subpar strokes per round. Baryla leads the nation in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.47 per hole. Kodama is third with an average of 4.48, while DeLaet is ninth, posting an average of 4.55 on the par 5s. Kodama is second in the nation in subpar strokes per round at 4.90. Fresno States Chad Spencer is fifth in the nation in total short game at .672.
As a team, UTEP is fifth in the nation shooting under par, averaging 3.52 subpar strokes per round, while it is is 10th in par 5 scoring at 4.78. SMU leads the WAC and is eighth in the nation in greens in regulation at .652.
