WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boise States Forest Braden and UTEPs Corine van Beek have been named the Western Athletic Conference mens and womens Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Braden, a sophomore from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, placed fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational with a Boise State record time of 13:45.41. Braden broke an eight-year record in the event which was held by Cormac Smith (13:51.60, 1996). Bradens time was also an NCAA regional qualifying mark.

van Beek, a senior from Ermelo, Netherlands, ran the Midwest Regions faster time of the year in the 1,5000 meters at the Cardinal Invitational on April 30. She crossed in 11th with a time of 4:18.50, the fastest time in the WAC this season.

  • Additional mens nominees included: Adam Davis, Rice; Mircea Bogdan, UTEP and Justin Rempel, Tulsa.

  • Additional womens nominees included: Neely Falgout, Boise State; Nina Gilbert, Louisiana Tech and Melanie Hardy, Tulsa.

    SMU, RICE RANKED AMONG NATIONS TOP 25 - The SMU mens team is ranked 11th in the nation according to Trackwire. The Mustangs are led by a quadrant of throwers all ranking in the top seven in the nation. In the discus, Michael Robertson and Hannes Hopley are rated first and second, respectivley, according to Trackwires Dandy Dozen. In the hammer throw, Jerome Bortoluzzi is fifth. Led by Ryan Harlan, Rice is ranked in top 25 this week, moving up two spaces to No. 21. Harlan posted the worlds top decathlon mark at 8,045.

    UTEPS ERENG JOINS DRAKE RELAYS ATHLETES HALL OF FAME - UTEP head cross country coach and Olympic gold medallist Paul Ereng was inducted into the Drake Relays Athletes Hall of Fame during an April 22 reception in DesMoines, Iowa. Ereng's induction increased membership in to the Drake Relays Athletes Hall of Fame to 195. The Athletes Hall of Fame was established in 1959 during the Golden Anniversary of the Drake Relays with 72 charter members, including Jesse Owens who was named the outstanding performer during the first half century of the Drake Relays. Ereng was a three-time NCAA champion, a four-time NCAA All-American, the 1988 Olympic gold medallist in Seoul, South Korea; a two-time World Indoor champion and a former world record holder.

    2004 WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO HELD IN HOUSTON - The 2004 edition of the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held, May 12-15 at the Rice Track Stadium on the campus of Rice in Houston. The multi events are scheduled for Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13 with the preliminaries and finals scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Rice last hosted the outdoor championship in 2002. The UTEP men and Rice women look to defend their 2003 outdoor titles.

    NEVADA RANKED IN THE USTCA TOP 10 - With a little more than a week before the 2004 Outdoor WAC Championships, Nevada moved up to seventh in the United States Track & Field Coaches Association (USTCA) Team Power Rankings National Poll Thursday. Nevada has been a steady top-25 throughout the season but had not broken into the top-10 all year.
