DENVER The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2004 all-WAC baseball teams and postseason awards as selected by the leagues head coaches. Fresno State sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett was named the Player of the Year, Rice junior Wade Townsend earned Pitcher of the Year honors, and the Freshman of the Year award went to Rice second baseman Josh Rodriguez. Hawaii head coach Mike Trapasso was selected as Coach of the Year.

Robnett, a sophomore from Visalia, Calif. (Santa Barbara CC), hit .460 with 31 RBI, 14 doubles, nine home runs and scored 31 runs in 29 conference games. He led the WAC in batting average, slugging percentage (.841), on-base perdentage (.533), hits (52), doubles and total bases (95). Robnett also leads the WAC in all games in batting average (.384), slugging percentage (.699), doubles (27), total bases (160), stolen bases (21) and is third in home runs with 13.

Townsend, a junior from Dripping Springs, Texas (Dripping Springs HS), earned the WACs Pitcher of the Year award after putting together a record of 7-0 with one save in 11 WAC appearances. He had a WAC-best ERA of 1.55 and was second in the conference with 92 strikeouts. In all games, he is 11-0 in 17 appearances with a 1.60 ERA and 141 strikeouts.

Rodriguez, a native of Houston (South Houston HS), hit .311 in 29 conference games. He had 17 RBI, six doubles and scored 19 runs. In all games, he has hit .313 with 31 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

Trapasso, in his third season with Hawaii, led the Rainbows to a 31-24 overall record, the second best mark in the WAC, and a fourth place finish in the league standings with a 13-16 record. Its Trapassos first WAC Coach of the Year award.

Fresno State and Rice led the conference with four players each on the all-WAC first team. Hawaii, Nevada and San Jose State each had two and Louisiana Tech placed one on the first team. Repeat selections from 2003s first team included Nevadas Brett Hayes and Rices Chris Kolkhorst, Wade Townsend and Philip Humber. This is the third consecutive year on the first team for both Kolkhorst and Humber.

Fresno State and Hawaii placed four players each on the second team, followed by Nevada with three, Rice with two and Louisiana Tech win one.
