TULSA WINS SIXTH-STRAIGHT WAC TITLE The University of Tulsa brought home its sixth-straight WAC Women's Golf title, shooting a final round 296 to pass San Jose State at the Underwood Golf Course in El Paso, Texas. San Jose State senior Ashley Gomes led wire-to-wire to take home top honors, shooting an even-par, 216. Gomes opened the championship with the tournament's best round, 68, followed by a 73 and 76, earning her the WAC's Player of the Year honor.
There were three student-athletes with a 68 on day one which ties the WAC's single round record, held previously by three other golfers.
Tulsa opened the tournament with a 294, trailing San Jose State by three. The Golden Hurricane made up one stroke on day two, but cleared the field in the final day, as they were the only team to break 300. They were led by first-team all-WAC member, senior Julie Tvede who finished second with three-day, 219. Tvede fell three shots back of defending her 2003 title.
San Jose State's Ashley Gomes brought home the hardware, staking claim to the tournament champion, WAC Player of the Year and a first team all-WAC selection. Gomes is the first Spartan to take home the title since Marie Hedberg helped San Jose State win in 1997.
Rounding out the top three were Tvede and SMU freshman Laura Cross. Cross was the most consistent player over the three days, firing rounds of 74, 73, 73, en route to a 220. She was named the WAC's Freshman of the Year. Cross won two tournaments earlier in the season for the Mustangs.
SMU made the biggest jump this season compared to last year's finish. After a seventh-place finish in 2003, the Mustangs took third, earning head coach Todd Selders, WAC Coach of the Year. The Mustangs brought home three titles in the regular season.
