SMU, UTEPS BARYLA COMPETE IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS SMU fired a third round 302 (+22) to finish tied for 26th at the 2004 NCAA Championship in Hot Springs, Va. SMUs three round total of 887 (+47) left the Mustangs 16 strokes shy of making the cut for the fourth and final round, thus ending the season for a SMU squad that won the teams first conference championship since 1988. The top 15 teams advanced to the final 18 holes of play. UCLA won the team competition at 14 over (1,134).

On the third day, the Mustangs posted a 22 over total of 302 on the day. SMU was led by the efforts of freshman Dan Kleckner who finished a very solid week of play with a third round 73 (+3) on the par 70 course. Kleckner birdied three holes on the day in his final competition of his freshman campaign.

Individually, senior Chris Baryla of UTEP missed the cut carding a 78 on the third day, leaving him tied for 123rd place through 54 holes. Baryla finished with a 16-over-par 226 (74-74-78). UNLVs Ryan Moore won the individual competition, firing a 13-under for the tournament.

GCAA ANNOUNCES PING ALL-AMERICA TEAMS - The WAC placed four golfers on the PING All-America teams. UTEPs Chris Baryla was named the to the third team, while Will Dodson of SMU, David Inglis of Tulsa, and Hawaiis Matt Kodama were all honorable mention selections.

SMU WINS WAC MENS GOLF TITLE SMU won the 2004 WAC men's golf team championship on May 5 after shooting a 1-over 285 in the third round at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif. The Mustangs beat second-place Tulsa by 11 strokes. Tulsa's David Inglis won the individual title after shooting a 2-under 69 to finish at 4-under for the tournament. It was Inglis' fourth consecutive WAC title. Inglis joins Texas Justin Leonard as the only player in NCAA history to win his conference championship four years in a row.

BARYLA RANKED IN GOLFSTAT TOP 25 UTEP senior Chris Baryla, a Vernon, British Columbia native, finished ranked 22nd by the Golfstat rankings. He owns a 70.53 strokes per round average to lead the WAC. Baryla is one of four WAC golfers to have taken a title this year. Baryla won the Barona Cup in San Diego, firing a -17, 199 in October of 2003. Baryla finished the 2003 fall season ranked seventh by Golf Stat.

WAC TRIO AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN GOLFSTAT RANKINGS UTEPs Chris Baryla, Hawaiis Matthew Kodama and Boise States Graham DeLaet all finished ranked in the top 10 in both the Golfstat rankings for par 5 scoring and subpar strokes per round. Baryla leads the nation in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.49 per hole. Kodama is third with an average of 4.55, while DeLaet is 10th, posting an average of 4.57 on the par 5s. Kodama is second in the nation in subpar strokes per round at 4.70, while Baryla is seventh (4.40) and DeLaet is 10th (4.30). Baryla is also ninth in the nation in par 4 scoring aat 3.99.

As a team, UTEP is sixth in the nation shooting under par, averaging 3.32 subpar strokes per round.
