TUCSON, Ariz. - The Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball teams were announced today. Rice junior pitchers Wade Townsend and Philip Humber were named to the first team while Fresno State sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett earned second team consideration.
Townsend and Humber make up a heralded Rice staff that rank among the NCAA leaders in ERA (2.65) and strikeouts (550). The Owl duo are the only two players from the same school to be selected to the publication's first team. Earlier this week the same two Owls were named the Sports Weekly all-America teams.
Townsend is 11-0 with a 1.68 ERA, two complete game shut outs and 141 strikeouts in 112.2 innings. Humber is 13-2 with a 1.80 ERA, two complete games, a shutout and 132 strikeouts in 105 innings.
The 2004 WAC Player of the Year, Robnett led the conference in overall batting average (.384), slugging percentage (.699), doubles (27), total bases (160), stolen bases (21) and was second in hits (88) and third in home runs (13). His single season doubles total ranks second in school history while he became the first Bulldog since Steve Hosey in 1988 to record at least 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases.
