FRESNO STATE FALLS IN SWEET 16 - In a match that didn't finish until well after midnight local time, sixth-seeded Georgia survived a power outage and a change of venue to defeat Fresno State, 4-2, in an NCAA Tournament round of 16 match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Fresno State's season ends as a team with a record of 22-4, the second-most wins in program history.

In singles, the 32nd-ranked Shadisha Robinson took out No. 102-ranked Lucia Tallo 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Then at No. 4, Vlatka Jovanovic bowed out to the 108th-ranked Jitka Schonfeldova 6-2, 6-2.

The clincher came at No. 5, where 84th-ranked Natalie Frazier defeated Lucia Sainz 6-2, 6-2.

Pandzic earned ITA All-American honors for her stellar freshman campaign. She was the only WAC womens tennis player to earn All-America honors.

PANDZIC NAMED ITA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Jelena Pandzic picked up another award to place in her trophy-filled room on Sunday when she was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Rookie Player of the Year. She was presented the award at the annual ITA Awards Banquet, held at the University of Georgia.

The honor is the first national award ever received by a Fresno State women's tennis player. The Split, Croatia, native is an All-American this year in singles and has also been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first-team All-WAC in singles and doubles and the WAC Freshman of the Year.

FRESNO STATE'S PANDZIC LOSES IN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH - Amber Liu of Stanford put a stop to what appeared to be Fresno State freshman Jelena Pandzic's inevitable run to the NCAA Singles title on May 29 with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 victory over the Fresno State freshman at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

The victory gives Liu her second NCAA title in a row and served as a bookend to what has been a fantastic week for the No. 4 seed from La Mesa, Calif. Just six days ago, the Cardinal's top singles player helped lead her team to an NCAA team title over UCLA.

She finished the year with a 29-2 record.

MUSCOLINO FALLS IN THE SECOND ROUND - Tulsa sophomore Daniela Muscolino dropped a hard-fought battle in the second round.

The Golden Hurricane's 51st-ranked Muscolino fell, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to Arizona's 11th-ranked Dianne Hollands. This marked Muscolino's first appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship.

Muscolino netted a 24-8 singles record on the year.

KOUZMENKO LOSES IN THE FIRST ROUND OF NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - SMU sophomore Svetlana Kouzmenko fell in first round action of the NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Kouzmenko, ranked No. 79 in the nation, dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Vanderbilt's Kelly Schmandt. Schmandt entered the match ranked No. 61 in the nation.

Kouzmenko, a first team all-WAC selection, was making her first appearance at the NCAA Championship. Kouzmenko was also the first Mustang to compete in the singles competition since DeeDee Herring competed in the 2001.

TULSAS MUSCOLINO EARNS HONOR - Daniela Muscolino, received Intercollegiate Tennis Association central regional honors, as announced by the ITA. Muscolino was selected as the ITA Player to Watch. Muscolino chalked up a stellar sophomore year, posting a 24-8 singles record, including seven wins over ranked opponents. She earned all-conference singles and doubles first-team honors, and owns a career 45-17 singles mark and a 31-34 doubles record.

SMU FALLS IN SECOND ROUND - A day after capturing its biggest win of the 2004 season, the SMU women's tennis team nearly repeated the feat Sunday, dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 13 Texas A&M in second round action of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship in College Station, Texas. The Mustangs were making their first appearance in the round of 32 since 1988. The Mustangs defeated No. 25 TCU on Saturday, 4-2, to advance to Sunday's showdown with the Aggies.

In singles, the Aggies won four-straight matches at No. 4, No. 5, No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Texas A&M's Lauren Walker defeated SMU's Nadia Vaughan to even the score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Nicki Mechem followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lynsie Jones, giving Texas A&M the lead 2-1. No. 20 ranked Jessica Roland defeated SMU's No. 79 Svetlana Kouzmenko at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, giving the Aggies a 3-1 lead. Texas A&M clinched the win after No. 119 Helga Vieira defeated Kit Carson, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.

TULSA LOSES TO OKLAHOMA IN FIRST ROUND - Tulsa's 47th-ranked tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to 20th-ranked Oklahoma on May 15 in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla. In singles action, TU's 113th-ranked Somers dominated Baker, tallying a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 slot, but the Sooners' Saluri notched a 6-3, 6-1 win over Pereira in the No. 4 position.

Oklahoma's fifth-ranked Perianu netted a 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory over 51st-ranked Muscolino in the No. 1 slot, and Baker captured a 6-0, 7-5 mark over Donata Majauskaite in the No. 3 position to win the dual for the Sooners. Delport and Timberly Greenly's matches were unfinished at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively.

FRESNO STATE CAPTURES THIRD-STRAIGHT WAC TITLE - This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Houston, Texas at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University, April 30-May 2. The 2003 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its third-straight title.

Last season, the WAC Women's Tennis Championship went to Fresno State after a 4-2 win over Tulsa. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and fought off a determined Tulsa team to win three of the singles matches. Tulsa won two of the singles match and the final match on the court was stopped at the conclusion of the match.
