DENVER - The first day of the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships proved to be a long one with delays and cancellations due to serious thunderstorms throughout the day Wednesday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The WAC placed 54 student-athletes and three relay teams in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships run through July 12. For the WAC, are 29 women individual competitors and two relays, while for the men, one relay team and 26 individuals are competing in this year's championship.
The men are led by Ryan Harlan of Rice and Hannes Hopley of SMU. The pair both have the nation's top marks in their respective events. Harlan posted a mark of 8,054 in the decathlon, giving him the best mark in the world this year. Hopley had a discus throw of 67.66 meters at the Midwest Regional, giving him the new american collegiate record.
For the women, Allison Beckford of Rice will be making a run at another 400 meter title. Fresno State's Kara June, the WAC record holder in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, makes a push at All-America honors in the same event.
