She co-led the squad in goals (3) and shots on goal (5). Martin posted three goals and assisted on another during the week for the Owls. After scoring a pair of goals in a convincing win over cross-town rival Texas Southern, she scored the game-winner in overtime against Army. Lauren Shockley, a senior from Indianpolis, Ind., earned her second Player of the Week honor in as many weeks as she went 2-0-1 last week. She allowed only two goals in 223:24 minutes of action. Shockley made 13 saves on 15 shots-on-goal for a .867 percentage. She posted seven saves against Mountain West power, UNLV, helping the Owls to a 1-1 tie. UTEP plays host to Big 12 member and in-state rival Texas Tech at the Border Shootout ... Fresno State and Boise State will take on Mountain West rivals, New Mexico and Utah, respectivley ... Rice faces in-state rival Texas State, while Tulsa hosts Southwest Missouri State.UTEP AMONG LEADERS IN SCORING (Sept. 5)UTEP is ranked fifth in the country averaging 4.50 goals-per-game. The Miners have two athletes in the top 25 in goals-per-game, with freshman Jami Tullius and sophomore Christine McCartney both averaging 1.00. Kia Sams is ninth in the country with one assist-per-game average. UTEP leads the WAC in seven team offensive categories, in cluding 22 goals through six matches. The Miners are atop the WAC with a 5-1 record. SMU CRACKS NSCAA/ADIDAS TOP 25SMU, has one of the toughest schedules in the WAC, was ranked 24th in the Sept. 7 NSCAA/adidas poll. The Mustangs are 3-1-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of 12th ranked Santa Clara in double overtime. After opening the season with a win over cross-town rivel, the Mustangs tied 2004 NCAA Tournament member, Oklahoma. This week, SMU faces third-ranked UCLA, who dropped two matches over the weekend.AAKER POSTS FIRST HAT TRICK OF THE SEASONRices Angela Aaker posted the first hat trick of the 2004 season in the WAC. Aaker, a junior midfielder, came off the bench to record the first hat trick in school history. The former Kingwood (Houston) High School star scored all three goals on a school record seven shots, in a 15-minute span midway through the first half versus Texas Southern.2005 WAC MEMBER FALLS IN DEBUT WEEKENDLouisiana Tech, who is in its first year of sponsoring womens soccer, will join the WAC for the 2005 season. The Lady Techsters suffered a pair of losses in their opening weekend, falling, 6-0, to Louisiana-Lafeyette and, 3-0, to McNeese State. Louisiana Tech is already a member of the WAC in all other sports, but is acting as an independent for the 2004 season. SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2004 CROWNSMU has been picked to win its fourth-straight WAC title, as selected by the conference coaches. SMU, who finished 7-1 in conference play in 2003, defeated Rice in the final minute of the conference championship match, taking home its third title in as many seasons. The Mustangs are led by head coach John Cossaboon who returns eight starters from his championship squad. Leading the way for the Mustangs will be midfielders, Jill Heinemann and Olivia ORear, defender Amanda Jordan and goalkeeper Amanda Clark. ORear was tabbed the WACs 2003 Freshman of the Year. Jordan, Heinemann (the 2001 freshman of the year) and Clark have all been main stays on the all-WAC teams. SMU has a tough non-conference schedule, including matches against Santa Clara, Stanford, Oklahoma, UCLA and Texas, preparing them for a title-defense run.KAI LEADS 2004 PRESEASON ALL-WAC TEAMThe WAC announced its 2004 Preseason all-WAC team and Player of the Year as voted on by the coaches. SMU, the 2004 conference favorite, leads the team with five players. Rice placed three on the team, while Hawaii has two and UTEP one. The 2002 and 2003 WAC Player of the Year, Hawaii junior Natasha Kai, was named the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year.Kai, the nations top goal scorer from a year ago, was named the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year after earning the 2003 Player of the Year. The junior from Kahuku, Oahu, posted 30 points in conference, including 14 goals to lead the conference. In her rookie campaign in 2002, Kai became the first WAC player to win both Freshman and Player of the Year.There are 11 selections on this seasons preseason squad. At the forward position is Kai, Rice senior Sarah Yoder, and SMU sophomore and 2003 Freshman of the Year, Olivia ORear. In the midfield, there are SMU seniors Jill Heinemann and Erin MacCallum, Hawaii senior Joelle Sugai and junior Kaletia Roberts of UTEP. In defense, SMU junior Amanda Jordan and Rice senior Caitlin Currie and junior Erin Droger were selected. SMU senior Amanda Clark was named to the team as goalkeeper. Clark posted eight shutouts for the Mustangs in 2003.FOUR SCHOOLS NAME NEW HEAD COACHESFresno State, Nevada, San Jose State and Tulsa all made head coaching changes during the off season. Fresno State hired former Florida assistant Steve Springthorpe, while Nevada named Terri Patraw, a former head coach at Arizona State, to the helm of the Wolf Pack program. San Jose State tabbed Dave Siracusa as its head coach after three seasons as the mens assistant at San Diego State. Rena Richardson will lead the Tulsa squad after three seasons as the assistant at Alabama. WAC TO ADD NEW MEMBERSNew Mexico State, Idaho and Utah State will all join the WAC beginning July 1, 2005. New Mexico State does not sponsor a soccer program. Louisiana Tech, who is already a WAC member, is in its first season of womens soccer but will compete independently for the 2004 season. The Lady Techsters will join the conference in soccer beginning in 2005 along with Idaho and Utah State.FACING THE NATIONS BESTFourteen teams that participated in the 2003 NCAA Tournament will be opponents of WAC teams this season. The list includes the likes of 2001 National Champion Santa Clara, and 2003 Final Four member, UCLA, and Sweet 16 member, Texas A&M.AROUND THE WACBoise State Broncosoff to their best start in history with a 4-2-0 record after six matches ... they split at home in the Soccer Etc. Nike Classic losing to Minnesota, 3-0, before rebounding to down Montana, 2-1 ... the loss to Minnesota ended a school record five-match home winning streak for the Broncos ... BreeAnn Milligan was named co-MVP of the Classic while Cassidy Temple, Libby Johnson and Brennan Lau joined her on the All-Tournament Team ... the Broncos hit the road to take on Utah Valley State Mountain West defending champion Utah.Fresno State Bulldogspicked up their first win of the season, posting a, 5-0, win over Sacramento State ... five different players found the net for the Bulldogs ... Kortney Lewis is back on track for Fresno State ... after failing to take a single shot in the first two matches, Lewis has scored twice and assisted on two goals in the past three matches.Hawaii Rainbow Wahinehosted the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, where Duke captured the title ... coming off the heels of a 2-0 win over Hawaii, the nationally ranked Blue Devils did not skip a beat to win the round-robin tournament ... the Rainbow Wahine take on Long Beach Sept. 13 in the final match of the tournament. Nevada Wolf Packfreshman Jessica Wilcox scored her first collegiate goal against Sacramento State ... sophomore Lauren Kinneman leads the team with two assists, which already marks a career-high ... Nevada took a team-high 22 shots against Sacramento State, including 13 on goal. Rice Owlsare off to their best start in the young four-year history of the program ... no less than four of the Owls games have gone into overtime, three into double-overtime ... though the Owls had set a school record with 28 shots in the 1-0 road win at Northwestern State (Sept. 5), that mark lasted all of 72 hours when the Blue and Gray peppered crosstown rival Texas Southern with 48 shots on the way to a 13-0 win (Sept 8) three days later ... there were a host of school records piled-up in the contest, including new superlatives for goals (13), assists (9), shots (48) and shots on goal (27).San Jose State Spartansfell to California, 5-1, at the Saint Marys Classic in Moraga ... the Spartans lone goal of the day came at the 31:15 mark on an unassisted goal by Shannon Leslie ... she led the team with two shots ... San Jose State had seven shots, four on goal for the match ... goalkepper Erin Lavey made five saves in the loss.SMU Mustangshead coach John Cossaboon needs seven more victories to claim 100 career wins ... nine different SMU players have scored goals this season ... SMU has outscored its opponents, 16-7, this season and hitting 51.7 percent of its shots-on-goal attempts ... SMU takes on two west coast powerhouses in UCLA and Saint Marys College this weekend.UTEP Minersmoved to 5-1 on the season with a pair of wins over Eastern Washington and UC Davis at the Highlander Classic ... UTEP handed EWU a 1-0 defeat when freshman Jami Tullius scored the games only goal in the 34th minute ... senior Heather Clark registered her first assist of the season and the 10th of her career ... she is now in fifth place on the UTEP career assist list ... the game also marked the 36th shutout victory in school history.Tulsa Golden Hurricanenewcomer class has continued to provide them with offense ... the class has produced two of Tulsas four goals this season and has five of the teams 12 totals points ... the Golden Hurricane hosted in-state rivals Oklahoma and Oklahoma State last weekend and recorded a two-game total attendance of 1,191, or an average of 595 fans per game ... junior Carrie Schnarre was named to the 2004 Oklahoma Shootout all-Tournament team ... although she did not score, she is currently Tulsa's scoring leader with one goal and one assist for three points.
