RENO, Nev. - Kim Gervasoni, head womens basketball coach at the University of Nevada, announced that she filled her final roster spot for the 2004-05 season Wednesday with guard Angelita Hutton. Hutton is a transfer from Contra Costa College and is the only JC-transfer in this years signing class.
As a freshman, Hutton started all 33 games for the Contra Costa team that went 29-4, won the Bay Valley Conference-Bay Division Championship and advanced to the state Final Four. She collected a number of national accolades including being named to the Junior College/Community College Kodak/WBCA All-America team. Only 10 players in the country make the list and Hutton was the only freshman.
Last season she led the Comets in scoring (13.1 ppg), three-pointers (45) and blocked shots (1.8 bpg). She also had 132 rebounds (4.0 rpg), 100 assists (308 apg) and 90 steals (2.7 spg). Hutton was also the Comets most consistent player scoring in double figures in 27 of 33 pacing her team over Butte College with a season-high 20. She made at least one three-pointer in 29 of 33 games.
Hutton had intended to make an immediate impact at Nevada, but she will have to sit out her first season in 2004-05. During the summer before joining the team, she hurt her knee. After extensive tests by the Nevada training staff it was discovered that she tore her ACL with a possible miniscus tear in the right knee. She will have to undergo surgery on Sept. 20 this year and hopes to return to the court by May of 2005.
The coaching staff is extremely excited to have Lita in our program, head coach Kim Gervasoni said. She is a very athletic, versatile guard who can create her own shot as well as shots for her teammates. Lita has played for two very good programs at Berkeley High School and Contra Costa College. Her poise, maturity and experience will help this program tremendously. She will be rehabbing an ACL reconstruction this season. Having the year to learn our system will be invaluable and will allow her to step in and help us immediately next year.
The 5-9 guard graduated from Berkeley High School in Berkeley, Calif. During her four years at Berkeley her team played for the state championship twice. She was also tabbed honorable mention for both the All-Metro League and Street & Smiths All-America team.
