DENVER UTEPs Mickael Hanany and Adriana Pirtea have been named the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
Hanany, a sophomore from Cergy, France, won the high jump at the Wes Kittley Six-Way in Lubbock, Texas, with a NCAA provisional height of 7-3 (2.21m), in his first meet for UTEP since transferring from SMU. He cleared all of his bars on his first attempt missing at 7-4 1/2 (2.25). The jump is currently the best in the NCAA this season and ranks sixth best in school history.
Pirtea, a senior from Bucharest, Romania, won the mile at the West Kittley Six-Way in Lubbock, Texas in a time of 4:45.24. The time, converted to 4:41.99, is a high NCAA provisional time and leads the nation this season. The unconverted time is the second fastest time in WAC history, behind UTEP's Corine van Beek who broke the mile record last season in 4:44.66. The unconverted time is also the fourth fastest in school history. The converted time breaks both the school and conference record.
