Boise State's Shields Earns Men's Tennis Player of the Week Honors

DENVER Boise State freshman Luke Shields has been named the Western Athletic Conference Mens Tennis Player of the Week. This is the first player of the week honor for Shields.

Shields, a freshman from, Grand Junction, Colo., helped led the Broncos to a 4-0 win over UNLV and a 4-0 win over Colorado to win the ITA Mountain Region Championship Saturday, Jan. 22, earning the team a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships Feb. 17-20. He had one win in singles over UNLV's Henner Nehles 6-2 6-3, and a doubles win with partner Thomas Schoeck over Colorado's No. 1 team of Digliodo and Tsuda, 8-4. Shields is ranked 42nd nationally and he and Thomas Schoeck are ranked 12th nationally in doubles.

OTHERS NOMINATED Fresno States Jakub Cech went 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the Bulldogs started the career of Jay Udwadia on a successful note. Udwadia took over as Fresno States head mens tennis coach in October after former coach Brad Dancer resigned in late August ... Rices Hoony Shin won the B flight at the seventh Annual Met/Rice Indoor Invitational. He was seeded fourth in the B singles draw and defeated Kentuckys Carey Rubin 7-5, 6-3, for the win ... SMUs Paul McNaughton had two straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 2. He defeated Aurelio Martinez from TSU 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 and won 6-1, 6-1 over Bateman from PVAM at No. 1 Aleksander Charpantidis went 3-0 over last week to improve to 5-0 in the spring, playing in the No. 2 ladder position. He has a 12-5 overall. In doubles action, Charpantidis and doubles partner Achim Roth have a 3-1 spring record and a 14-5 record overall.
