DENVER Rice forward Michael Harris has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for December 27-January 2.
Harris, a senior from Hillsboro, Texas (Hillsboro HS), averaged 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and had two double-doubles in a pair of WAC victories last week. He scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out five assists in a 66-64 overtime win against SMU on Thursday and then had 27 points and 14 boards in a 78-57 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday. In the two games combined, Harris was 17-of-25 (.680) from the field and 9-of-11 (.818) from the free throw line. It is Harris fourth career WAC Player of the Week award and first for an Owl player this year.
The other nominations were senior center Mustafa Al-Sayyad, Fresno State; sophomore forward Paul Millsap, Louisiana Tech; sophomore forward Nick Fazekas, Nevada; junior guard Bryan Hopkins, SMU; junior guard/forward Jason Williams, UTEP; and junior center Anthony Price, Tulsa.
