Hawai`i Wins 100th-Straight WAC Volleyball Match

The No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (15-6, 8-0 WAC) swept through the San Jose State Spartans (9-11, 4-4 WAC) 30-27, 30-22 and 30-24, to run their WAC winning streak to 100 consecutive matches, in front of a crowd of 7,556 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.

Ashley Watanabe came up with 24 digs to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Juliana Sanders hit .400 with 13 kills and eight blocks, while Susie Boogaard had 10 kills and five digs while hitting .368. Kanoe Kamana`o put up 48 assists, 10 digs and four blocks. Sarah Mason had eight kills, five digs and five blocks while hitting .727 in just two games before going out with an injury to her right ankle. The injury isn't major and Mason is not expected to miss any future matches because of it.

Tanya Allen led the Aggies in kills for the second consecutive outing as the New Mexico State dropped Boise States 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-18) Saturday night in the Pan American Center.s The Aggies improve to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in WAC play while the Broncos fall to 5-11 on the season, 1-8 in the WAC.

Allen led the Aggies with 14 kills and eight digs while hitting a hot .444 with only two errors. Kim Oguh smacked 12 kills of her own while setter Jackie Choi recorded her second consecutive double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs. Two other Aggies also recorded double figures in digs as sophomore Briana Akrie (Aurora, Colo.) tallied 12 and sophomore Jordan Bostic added 17.

For the second time in three weeks, the Bulldogs welcomed a top WAC opponent to the North Gym and came out the victor in a tight match. Fresno State hit .435 in a deciding final game and defeated second-place Nevada 28-30, 32-30, 30-23, 24-30, 18-16. Alison Pitton led the Bulldogs with 29 kills in the win, a season high for the Bulldogs and a career best for Pitton.

Not a game for the faint of heart, the match consisted of wild runs, comebacks and four match points for the Wolfpack, but Fresno State took advantage of their first match point and came away with the win. Game one was indicative of the way that the match would be played. The two teams stayed even in the beginning of the opener, but Fresno State started a run after a 10-10 tie and took an 18-12 lead after two kills from Alison Pitton. Nevada pulled the Bulldogs back to a tie at 21-21 before Fresno State recovered to take a 27-24 lead. Nevada won six of the last seven points though, and overtook the Bulldogs 30-28.

Idaho snapped its three game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a three game sweep of Louisiana Tech at Ruston, L.A.s Game scores were 30-24, 30-21, and 30-22.

The Vandals recorded 15 kills and only two errors in game one for a .371 hitting percentage for the 30-24 win.s In game two Idaho held Louisiana Tech to a .091 hitting percentage while hitting .250 percent.s The Vandals had a slight offensive letdown in game three as they hit .171 percent, but the Lady Techsters recorded only eight kills and nine errors for a -.031 hitting percentage allowing the Vandals to take the 30-22 win and the match.
