No. 10 Hawai`is (17-6, 11-0 WAC) swept Fresno State (4-17, 2-9) 30-24, 30-17 and 30-24 at North Gym Saturday, pushing their WAC winning streak to 102 matches and their consecutive games streak to 28 games.
Victoria Prince hit .526 with 10 kills and five blocks in just two games played. Kanoe Kamana`o also came up big with 51 assists, five digs, five blocks and two aces while Ashley Watanabe had a match-high 20 assists. Sarah Mason added 14 kills, eight digs, three blocks and two aces while Juliana Sanders hit .529 with 10 kills and six blocks. Jamie Houston came off the bench to put up nine kills and a .375 hitting percentage in two games while Kari Gregory hit .571 with four kills and three digs in just one game.
The Bulldogs scored three of the first four points in the first game before a 9-1 run by Hawai`i put them ahead 10-4. Fresno State was able to pull within four at 14-10 before another UH run, of six-straight points, made it 20-10. Prince's fourth kill got Hawai`i to 28-18, but a 6-0 Bulldog run cut it back to 28-24 on an ace by Yuko Mori. Prince and Kamana`o then combined for a block before a Mason kill put it away at 30-24.
Fresno State again jumped out 3-1 in the second game before three-straight points, capped by a Kamana`o ace, put UH up 4-3. Prince later sparked a 5-0 run with two kills and two blocks, putting Hawai`i up 13-8, forcing a Bulldog timeout. The Rainbow Wahine also put up a 5-1 run and a big 10-2 run, making it 28-14 before winning the game 30-17.
Hawai`i scored the first two points in game three, only to see a 6-2 Fresno State run put the Bulldogs up 6-4. The Rainbow Wahine continued to trail at 13-11, but a six-point run sparked by back-to-back aces by Mason gave Hawai`i the lead at 17-13. Fresno State worked their way back into it at 21-20, only to see another run, at 5-0, give UH the 26-20 edge before winning it 30-24 on a Bulldog service error.
In Other WAC Action
Zuzana Cernianska recorded 21 kills and a career-high 22 digs to lead Utah State to a four-game win (30-24, 30-25, 26-30, 30-26) against San Jose State Saturday night.
With the win, Utah State improves to 15-9 overall and remains in second-place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-3 record, while San Jose State falls to 10-12 on the season and 5-5 in league play with the loss.
Along with her 21 kills and 22 digs, Cerninska also hit .326 in the match after missing USU's last contest due to injury. USU also got solid matches from both of its middle blockers as Ingrid Roth had 14 kills and seven blocks and hit .448 in the match, while Erin Graybill had nine kills and eight blocks, and hit .400.
Idaho extended its winning streak to three Saturday night with a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech in a WAC match at Memorial Gym.s Game scores were 30-18, 30-16, and 30-18.s The Vandals improve their record to 13-10 overall, 5-5 in the WAC.
The Vandals jumped out on top in game one and quickly built a five point lead at 10-5 and never looked back on their way to the 30-18 win.s Idaho recorded 18 kills and only three errors in the game for a .405 hitting percentage while Louisiana Tech hit .128 percent with 13 kills.
Four Aggies smacked double figures in kills as New Mexico State dropped the Boise State Broncos 3-1 (30-23, 30-19, 32-30, 31-29) Saturday night in Bronco Gym.s The Aggies improve their record to 14-5 on the year and 7-4 in the WAC while the Broncos fall to 6-12 overall, 2-9 in WAC play.s
Junior Alice Borden led the Aggie frontline with 17 kills while red-shirt freshman Amber Simpson added 15 and Tanya Allen and Kim Oguh each added 14.s Sophomore Briana Akrie led the defense with 19 digs while Jordan Bostic chipped in 18 and setter Jackie Choi added a season high 60 assists.
