Cross Country Travels to WAC Preview

VANDALS?™ OLSON TAKES WILLIAMETTE TITLE ?“ Idaho?™s Dee Olson finished in first place in the women?™s 5k university run at the Willamette Invitational, leading the Vandal women to a sixth place finish overall. She finished with a time of 17:01.50.

XBOX LIVE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK ?“ Utah State?™s Trever Ball and Idaho?™s Dee Olson have been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week.

Ball, a senior from Hyrum, Utah, finished 16th at the highly contested Notre Dame Invitational last week. He covered the five-mile course in 24:07 to pace the Aggies, who finished 11th as a team. Ball has been Utah State?™s top finisher in all three events this year.

Olson, a junior from Estracada, Ore., became the first Vandal woman to win a race this season, taking home top honors at the Williamette Invitational. She grabbed gold in a time of 17:01.50, helping Idaho to a sixth-place finish.

: Andrea Buckner, Fresno State; Tiffany Hall, San Jose State and Tiffany Strickland, Utah State.

WAC ENTERS NEW ERA ?“ The WAC is a nine-team league with the additions of Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State following the departures of Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa. It is the third time in conference history that the WAC will be comprised of nine teams (1980-91 and 2000).

LA TECH MEN TAKE NORTHWESTERN STATE INVITATIONAL ?“ Louisiana Tech?™s mens cross country team won its third straight meet at the Northwestern State Invitational at NSU Demon Hills Golf Course with all five top finishers for the Bulldogs placing in the top 10. Leading the way for Tech was junior Tim Marshall who finished in second place with a time of 26:47.48.

MR. T ?“ There have been five weeks of Xbox Live Athletes of the Week, and on the men?™s side, all of the winners, start with a T. Trever Ball of Utah State has earned the nod three times, along with Ty Axtman of Boise State and Tim Marshall of Louisiana Tech.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP ?“ The 2005 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Boise, Idaho. This year?™s championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at Eagle Island State Park. There will be two new team champions crowned with the departure of the Rice men and SMU women.

NCAA REGIONALS ?“ The 2005 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country. They will all be held Saturday, Nov. 12. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford). The Mountain Region will be held in Provo, Utah (BYU), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.
