WAC WOMEN?™S TENNIS NOTEBOOK
PLAYER OF THE MONTH?“ Boise State?™s Tatiana Ganzha and New Mexico State?™s Stjepan Beg have been named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month for the month of September. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for the junior. She is the second Rainbow Wahine to win the award with Victoria Prince getting the honor on Sept. 19.
Ganzha a freshman from Russia is undefeated this fall in both singles and doubles. She is 7-0 in singles so far this fall. In doubles, she is 7-0 with three different teammates. She has doubles wins with Jana Mackova, Alanah Carroll and Jen Wencel.
Beg, a junior from Rab, Croatia, played in the Aggies?™ only tournament so far this season, going 3-1 in singles play, advancing to the semifinals at the Aggie Invitational. In the semifinals, he fell to No. 3 NAIA ranked Ricardo Omana from College of Santa Fe. In doubles play, he finished 2-1 with wins over New Mexico and Northern Arizona and advanced to the semifinals.
Other women?™s tennis nominees: New Mexico State?™s Isabelle Mignot competed in two tournaments last month finishing undefeated in singles action with at perfect 7-0 record at the the UTEP Miner Fall Invitational and the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO ?“ This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Fresno, Calif. on the campus of Fresno State, April 20-23. The 2005 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its fourth-straight title at home. Last season, the Bulldogs took the title in Honolulu at Hawai'i.
FRESNO STATE PLAYERS ADVANCE IN DOUBLES AT ITA-ALL-AMERICAN ?“ Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter defeated Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand of Vanderbilt 8-1 Oct. 4 at the ITA All-American Championships during the doubles qualifying rounds in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Winterhalter also participated in the singles qualifying rounds losing in her second match to Olga Boulytcheva of BYU 7-6 (6), 6-4. Winterhalter won her first match though in impressive fashion. She dropped the first set 3-6 to Southern California?™s Carine Vermuelen. But battling back in the second set, Winterhalter stole the momentum winning 7-6 (5). She then finished the match by winning the third set 6-4.
This season Winterhalter is now 4-2 in tournament play. She went 3-1 in the Bulldog Classic, only losing to Margarita Kharnaukhova of Sacramento State in the final.
Over the weekend, three Bulldogs participated in the Cal Invitational. Sophomore Jacqui Haskett went 0-3, freshman Bruna Paes went 1-2 and freshman Vanessa Heroux went 1-2. Haskett and Paes went 1-2 in doubles play.
BOISE STATE TO HOST TOURNAMENT ?“ All of the singles players and doubles teams for the 2005 ITA Central Region Women?™s Tennis Championships have been selected. The tournament will begin Oct. 19 with the qualifying matches at the University of Utah and then will continue from Oct 20 through the Oct. 23.
NEW MEXICO STATE?™S MIGNOT OFF TO SOLID START ?“ Aggie women?™s tennis player Isabelle Mignot had a strong showing despite her loss at the ITA All-American tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Mignot fell in two tough sets to Charlene Zauft from the University of Texas, 6-2, 7-5.
Mignot (Bourg-Les Valence, France) is currently the only senior on the Aggie tennis team and the only player from NMSU to get accepted into the prestigious tournament. The ITA All-American tournament is the largest collegiate fall tournament in the country and is the second largest tournament of the year, being second to only the NCAA individual championships held each spring.
