DENVER Rices Pablo Solares and Louisiana Techs Latonia Wilson have been named the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
Solares, a sophomore from Richardson, Texas, placed second in the mile with a 4:05.65 at the Tyson Invitational. He also ran the lead-off leg of the distance medley relay that finished sixth with a 9:43.49. Both marks are the best times in the WAC this season. Solares also stepped in for an injured teammate to run the third leg of the 4x400-meter relay as the Owls posted their best time of the year with a 3:17.23.
Wilson, a sophomore from Amite, La., set a school record, posting a time of 23.74 in the 200 meters at the Tyson Invitational. The time is the top mark in the WAC and 10th fastest in the country. The Invitational played host to nine of the top 25 teams in the country. Wilson also ran on the 1,600 meter relay team that set a school record with a time of 3:37.48. Both marks are also provisional times.
Other men nominated: Forest Braden, Boise State; Johnathan Holland, Louisiana Tech and Elias Koech, UTEP.
Other women nominated: Mary Kamau, Idaho; Rachel Greff, Rice; Nina Schvedoff, UTEP; Gaelle Niare, SMU and Melanie Hardy, Tulsa.
