SJSU's Becktel and Rice's Geer Earn WAC Player and Pitcher of the Week

DENVER San Jose State outfielder Travis Becktel and Rice right-handed pitcher Josh Geer have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 7-13.

Becktel, a junior from San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (Capistrano Valley HS), hit .647 (11-for-17) in four games last week. He had at least two hits in each game, including three in each of the three games against UC Santa Barbara over the weekend. On Tuesday against San Francisco, he hit a solo home run, was walked once and stole a base. Against UCSB, he was 9-for-13 (.692) with a run and one RBI.

It is Becktels first career WAC Player of the Week award and second for a Spartan this year.

Geer, a junior from Forney, Texas (Navarro College), pitched eight innings of a 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked Texas A&M and allowed just one unearned run, one hit and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. At one point, he retired 21 hitters in a row. Geer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 Minute Maid Park College Classic.

It is Geers second career WAC Pitcher of the Week award.

Other player of the week nominations included: junior first baseman Luis Avila, Hawaii; junior first baseman Ben Mummy, Nevada; and junior outfielder Lance Pendleton, Rice.

Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: senior Ricky Bauer, Hawaii; sophomore Ryan Rodriguez, Nevada; and freshman Brandon Hennessey, San Jose State.
