Rice's Haerle Named Men's Tennis Player of the Week

DENVER Rice junior Tony Haerle has been named the Western Athletic Conference Mens Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 14. This is Haerles first honor of the spring.

Haerle, a junior from Stuggart, Germany, helped the No. 32 Owls win three to improve to 5-1 on the season. Haerle won all three of his matches in straight sets, defeating two ranked opponents in the process. He beat No. 82 Jeff Das of Brigham Young 6-1, 6-2 and No. 115 Tomas Bohunicky of Oklahoma State 6-2, 6-4. The junior also posted a win over Tulsas Aleksander Charpantidis 6-3, 6-4. He has now won his last five matches and six of his last seven. In doubles, he teamed with Filip Zivojinovic to win three doubles matches, including a win over the No. 40 tandem of Boris Kuharic and Juan Felipe Diaz of Oklahoma State 8-6. Rice scored three big wins last week all against ranked opponents.

OTHERS NOMINATED Boise States Thomas Schoeck, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated Oregon's Thomas Bieri 6-4 4-6 10-7, and defeated UC Santa Barbara's Ivan d'Argence 6-2 6-3. Also in doubles with freshman Luke Shields, defeated Oregon's No. 1 team of Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer 8-5, and UCSB's No. 1 team of Alex Anselme and Ivan d'Argence 8-3 ... Fresno States Andy Sinns three-set victory against Old Dominion helped pave the way for No. 54 Fresno States 4-2 victory over the 58th-ranked Monarchs.
