DENVER Louisiana Techs Ashley Cameron and Tulsas Julie Fennell have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Cameron is the first Lady Techster this year to earn a player of the week honor. Fennell is the second-straight Golden Hurricane to earn pitcher of the week honors.
Cameron, a sophomore from Abbeville, La., batted .467 while leading Louisiana Tech to a 4-1 record at the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament. Cameron registered seven hits in 15 at bats, while belting two doubles and four home runs and driving in eight runs. She totaled 21 bases in the tournament. The sophomore registered three hits in wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Jackson State, including hitting two homers and driving in a career-high four runs in the win over Jackson State. Cameron was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win over Southeastern La., helping Tech hand the Lions their first loss of the season.
Fennell, a sophomore pitcher from Catoosa, Okla., picked up the Golden Hurricanes first shutout of the season with a, 1-0, win over previously unbeaten Minnesota. Fennell struck out 12 batters in Tulsas extra inning loss to Northern Iowa, allowing only one run. The school record for batters struck out is 13.
