DENVER Nevada catcher/third baseman Brett Hayes and Hawaii right-handed pitcher Stephen Bryant have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 14-20.
Hayes, a junior from Calabasas, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), hit .462 (6-for-13) in a three-game sweep at UNLV. On Saturday, he went 2-for-5 with five RBI in the first game and then was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs in the nightcap. For the week, he scored four runs, drove in seven and stole a base.
It is Hayes fourth career WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Wolf Pack player this year.
Bryant, a senior from Chico, Calif. (Feather River CC), struck out 10 in 5.2 innings to help the Rainbows to a 10-2 victory over Pacific on Friday. He allowed just one run on one hit in picking up his first win of the season.
It is Bryants first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and first for a Rainbow this season.
Other player of the week nominations included: sophomore outfielder Nick Moresi, Fresno State; freshman shortstop Joe Spiers, Hawaii; senior outfielder Gil Laird, Louisiana Tech; and freshman catcher Danny Lehmann, Rice.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: senior Mitch Tucker, Louisiana Tech; junior Wesley Dorsett, Nevada; and junior Bryce Cox, Rice.
