SAN ANTONIO The 2005 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship began today with Hawaii winning the 200-yard medley relay and SMU capturing the 800-yard freestyle relay. The two teams are tied with 74 points after day one of the four-day event.
Hawaiis team of Nicole Mackey, Katie Clewett, Mia Broden and Dena Quick took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.00. SMU was a close second with a time of 1:41.11. It was the second year in a row that Hawaii opened the meet with a win in the first event.
In the only other race of the day, SMUs Jennifer Blackman, Celina Lemmen, Candace Blackman and Katie Roberts swam a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7:10.34 to win the 800 freestyle relay. Hawaii was second with a time of 7:20.05.
After one day of competition, Hawaii and SMU are tied for the lead with 74 points. Rice, Nevada and Northern Arizona are tied for third with 60 points. San Jose State is sixth with 52 points followed by San Diego with 48 points. Northern Arizona and San Diego are competing in their first WAC championship as affiliate members.
Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
