Nampa, Idaho -- The 2005 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship continued Thursday with the conclusion of the multi-events. In the mens heptathlon, Ryan Lang of Idaho tallied 5,081 points for gold. For the women in the pentathlon, Manuela Kurrat registered 3,999 points giving her gold. In the team competition, the Idaho men and BLANK women have the early lead through these first events. The Vandals tallied 16 points in the heptathlon, while Utah State earned 13 in the pentathlon.

    Following Idaho for the men is Utah State with 11 points, while Boise State (8) and Rice (4) round out the team scores. On the womens side, following Utah State is Idaho with 10 points, while in third is Fresno State with eight. In fourth is SMU with four points, with Louisiana Tech (3) and Boise State (1) rounding out the field.

    In taking home gold in the heptathlon, Lang registered 5,081 points, winning two events. Lang used a powerful showing in the long jump and pole vault to secure the win. This is the first year of the heptathlon at the WAC Championship. Lang was in second place by 164 points heading into Thursdays final three events. Even though he finished third in the final event of the night, the 1,000 meters, Lang won by 66 points. In second was Reece Hulbert of Utah State with 5,015 points, while Boise States Sterling Small rounded out the top three with 4,766 points.

    Kurrat, one of the nations top pentathletes, proved it tonight, taking home gold. Kurrat won the 60m-hurdles to start off the evening, then posted the farthest throw in the shot put and finished the event with a win in the 800m. She took second in the high jump and long jump. Kurrat did not relinquish her lead through out the night. Taking home silver was Katie Christianson of Fresno State, gathering 3,713 points, while Carrie Yost took third with 3,703 points.

    In the first event of the evening for the women, Kurrat earned a time of 8.88 in the 60-meter hurdles, gathering 935 points. In the high jump, two women cleared 1.68m, earning 830 points. Carrie Yost and Lacy Schroeder of Utah State both posted the height. The shot put was the third event for the women with Kurrat taking top honors with a throw of 13.21m (741 pts). The women continued with the long jump, where Katie Christianson of Fresno State jumped 5.67m for the gold. Her distance was good for 750 points. The final event of the night for the women was the 800m. Kurrat posted a time of 2:21.80 good for 799 points and the title.

    For the men in the 60m hurdles, Sterling Small of Boise State posted a time of 8.27 for 915 points. In the sixth event of the seven, the pole vault, Lang cleared the bar at 4.30m, enough for 702 points. The final event for the men was the 1,000 meters. Earning 813 points with a time of 2:45.57 was Small.

    The meet continues Friday with the full slate of individual events begins Friday with the mile at 4:00 p.m.
