SAN ANTONIO Hawaii won three of the five events in day two of the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Womens Swimming and Diving Championships, but SMUs depth enabled the Mustangs to open up a big lead in the team standings.

The night began with SMU placing six swimmers in the top final of the 500-yard freestyle. Anja Carman won the event for the Mustangs with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:41.50. SMUs Flavia Rigamonti also automatically qualified with a 4:42.29. Teammate Celina Lemmen completed the sweep of the medals with a time of 4:47.36.

In the 400 individual medley, Hawaiis Nicole Mackey swam an automatic time of 1:58.90 while her teammate Yan Chen took second (2:01.87). Rainbow Wahine Dena Quick won the 50 free as the top three swimmers hit automatic qualifying marks. Quicks time of 22.58 took first. Hawaiis Melanie Schlanger was second (22.70) and SMUs Laura Pomeroy took third (22.73).

The Rainbow Wahine took the top two spots in 1-meter diving led by QiongJie Huangs 323.90 points and Rui Wang (259.90).

SMU won the final event of the day swimming a 1:31.18 in the 200 freestyle relay. The team consisted of Pomeroy, Leane Darling, Roxane Akradi and Lemmen.

After two days of competition, SMU is leading with 332 points while Hawaii is second with 256. Nevada is third with 169 points followed by Rice with 149, Northern Arizona 142, San Jose State 89 and San Diego 88. Northern Arizona and San Diego are competing in their first WAC championship as affiliate members.

Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving and 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
