SAN ANTONIO Hawaii and SMU continued to dominate at the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Womens Swimming and Diving Championships. The two teams have combined to win all 14 events through three days of the four-day meet.
Hawaiis Nicole Mackey won her second individual event of the meet with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 4:12.94 in the 400-yard individual medley. Yesterday, Mackey won the 200 individual medley. Teammate Mia Broden took gold medal honors in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.76.
SMU came back to win the next three events. Celina Lemmen posted a NCAA qualifying mark of 1:45.94 in the 200 freestyle. Mustang Candace Blackman was second and also qualified with a 1:46.74. Hawaiis Melanie Schlanger was the third qualifying swimmer of the event with a 1:47.59. SMUs Tamara Sambrailo won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.12, just out-touching her teammate Corrie Clark (1:02.20). Anja Carman took top honors in the 100 backstroke in 54.91.
Hawaii won the final two events as diver QiongJie Huang won for the second night in a row, this time in 3-meter with a score of 544.85. The Rainbow Wahine team of Mackey, Katie Clewett, Broden and Schlanger won the 400 medley relay in 3:40.28.
After three days of competition, SMU has 607 points while Hawaii is second with 466. Nevada is third with 352 points followed by Rice with 316, Northern Arizona 277, San Jose State 173 and San Diego 141. Northern Arizona and San Diego are competing in their first WAC championship as affiliate members.
Action concludes tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
