Rice's Savery and Fresno State's Garza Named WAC Baseball Players of the Week

DENVER Rice outfielder/DH Joe Savery and Fresno State right-handed pitcher Matt Garza have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 21-27.

Savery, a freshman from Bellaire, Texas (Lamar HS), hit .643 (9-for-14) in four games for the Owls last week. Rice was 3-1 in those contests. He had two doubles, a triple, was walked four times, scored two runs and had seven RBI in the four games. On Friday, he was 3-for-3 with three RBI and was walked twice in a 9-1 win over Western Carolina. Savery also pitched in that game and threw seven innings, allowing one run, four hits and a walk in picking up the victory.

It is Saverys first career WAC Player of the Week award and first for an Owl player this year.

Garza, a junior from Fresno, Calif. (Washington Union HS), struck out a career-high 12 hitters in a 12-3 win over Chicago State on Friday. He pitched seven innings and allowed one unearned run, four hits and no walks for his first win of the season.

It is Garzas second career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and first for a Bulldog this season.

Other player of the week nominations included: senior second baseman DeAndre Miller, Fresno State; junior second baseman Isaac Omura, Hawaii; and senior second baseman Brandon Haygood, Louisiana Tech.

Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: senior Stephen Bryant, Hawaii; junior Steve Alverson, Louisiana Tech; and freshman Joe Savery, Rice.
