PLAYER OF THE WEEK Tulsa junior Timberly Greenly has been named the Western Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 31. This is her first honor of the spring.

Greenly, a junior from Yukon, Okla. Timberly is 3-0 in the spring season. Last week, she defeated SMUs Lynsie Jones in a close match, winning 6-4, 7-6 (6) to give Tulsa the winning point in the dual match. No. 50 Tulsa defeated No. 44 SMU, 4-2. In doubles, Greenly also contributed to winning the doubles point. She and partner Kindsay Grimes defeated SMUs Allison Lueszler and Maria Braniecka, 8-6.

OTHERS NOMINATED Rices Blair DiSesa defeated No. 40 Ramona But of Maryland in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to help the Owls defeat the No. 52 Terrapins 5-2 and move to 3-0 on the season. The win was her 12th of the season and her third over a ranked opponent. She is now a perfect 3-0 in dual match play at the number one spot ... SMUs Svetlana Kouzmenko grabbed two more singles wins at the No. 2 position over the weekend in Tulsa, Okla. On Jan. 29, she bested Jana Kubicikova of Oklahoma State 6-2, 6-2. On Jan. 30, she also cruised to a straight-set win over Santie Delport of Tulsa 6-2, 6-3. The wins upped her singles record to 3-0 in the No. 2 spot.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HONOLULU This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on the campus of the University of Hawaii, April 21-24. The 2004 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its third-straight title.

NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE
Tenth-ranked Washington defeated the Boise State Broncos at the Nordstrom Tennis Center Saturday (Jan. 29). The Huskies (4-0) won by a score of 7-0. The Broncos, however, did win at the number three doubles position with Tiffany Coll and Nadja Woschek defeating the Huskies Saskia Nauenberg and Allison Rainey, 8-5. This was the Broncos opening match of the 2005 season.

Fresno States 6-1 win over Santa Clara improved the teams home winning streak to 16, dating back to the 2003 season. The Bulldogs havent lost a home match since dropping a 5-2 decision on March 3, 2003, to ninth-ranked William and Mary. Fresno State went 9-0 at home a year ago, the fourth time since 1998 the team went through an entire season without losing a match at the Wathen Tennis Center. Since the facility was dedicated in January 1998, the Bulldogs have gone 66-7 at home, a winning percentage of .904.

Louisiana Tech took the all-important doubles point to take a 4-3 season opening win over Stephen F. Austin at the Louisiana Tech tennis courts. Tech's Avril Martinez and Monica Kelly teamed for a No. 1 doubles 8-2 win over SFA's Robin Houston and Kama Scott while Tech's Saharai Uriarte and Holly Ready combined for a No. 2 doubles win over Ashley Johnson and Megan Langston by the score of 9-8 to secure the doubles point for Tech. Houston gave SFA a No. 1 singles win 6-4, 7-6 over Saharai Uriarte, but Tech picked up wins from Kelly in No. 2 singles, Anabella Duque in No. 4 singles and Martinez in No. 6 singles to pick up the overall team win.

Rain that caused problems with matches all weekend in the Las Vegas area finally cleared out, but Nevada was defeated by No. 46 UNLV 7-0 Sunday morning on a sunny but breezy day at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Nevada had to cancel its match with New Mexico State that was rained out Saturday, now dropping to 1-1 on the season.

Rice earned its highest ranking in five years by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) when the organization announced Tuesday the Owls are ranked 53rd. Prior to the Feb. 1 rankings, Rice was ranked as high as 56. The Owls defeated Maryland, 5-2 last weekend, to move up 14 slots in the rankings. Rice is led by Blair DiSesa, who is ranked 89th in the most recent poll (Jan. 11). Rice, 3-0 this season, hosts 12th-ranked Louisiana State Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.

San Jose State was defeated by the Saint Marys Gaels, 6-1, in the Spartans season-opener. The visiting Gaels won five out of the six singles matches and two out of the three doubles matches to raise their dual match record to 2-0. Courtney Koenigsfeld won 6-4, 6-4, over Kate Harden to give the Spartans their only point in the match.

The No. 44 SMU Mustangs fell to the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The 4-2 loss brings the Mustang team to 5-1 for the spring season. In the singles competition, No. 90 Svetlana Kouzmenko defeated Santie Delport 6-2,6-3. Allison Leuszler was defeated 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 by Carla Zabaleta. No. 72 Jenny Langer was topped by No. 50 Daniela Muscolino 6-4, 6-1, and Lynsie Jones lost to Timberly Greenly 6-4, 7-6 (6).

UTEP will open its home season on Friday and Saturday against Air Force and Lamar. Last year, UTEP was 2-4 at home. The Miners won a pair of doubles matches agaisnt nationally ranked Arizona and Scramento State last week. Tea Spirta is ranked 23rd in singles in the ITA Southwest Region. UTEP has three freshman on its 2005 spring roster.

Tulsa defeated No. 44 SMU 4-2 to improve to 3-0 on the season. Singles wins came from Daniela Muscolino, Carla Zabaleta and Timberly Greenly. Doubles wins came from Lisette Pereira and Santie Delport as well as Greenly and Kindsay Grimes.

MUSCOLINA FALLS AT NATIONAL INDOORS
Junior Daniela Muscolino Tulsa's Daniela Muscolino dropped her first two matches at the 2004 National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Michigan at the UM Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. Muscolino lost her first match on Thursday, Nov. 4, to Suzi Babos (California), in three sets, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2. In the first round of competition in the consolations draw, Muscolino dropped her match to Jennifer Magley (Florida), in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (5). Muscolino's play in the tournament wraps up the fall competition for the Golden Hurricane women's team. They will return to action in January.

HAWAII RETURNS HOME After two brief mainland stints, Hawaii continues early-season tournament play, this time playing host to the first-ever Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational, beginning Thursday, Nov. 11, at the newly renovated UH Tennis Complex. With some of the top collegiate womens tennis teams in the country competing in the event, Hawaii is hoping to make a positive impression early in the season. Competing in this weeks tournament are No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 39 Arizona, and Texas State. Arizona features the No. 1 ranked doubles team in Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands. Hollands is also currently ranked No. 7 in singles.Hawaii has been led in singles play by senior Kimberly Curtis, who played her way into the main draw of the ITA Western Regional Championships on Oct. 21, and has posted an overall record of 2-4 in tournament play. Fellow seniors Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor have excelled on the doubles side, heading into the Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational with a 2-2 season record.
