Jamie Southern
Fresno State
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK --- A strong weekend on both sides of the ball, Fresno States Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) was announced today as the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week for the week February 21-27. A senior pitcher and first baseman for the Bulldogs, she hit .500 while posting a 2-1 record from the circle during the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

I cant say enough good things about Jaime, said Bulldogs head coach Margie Wright. Everybody sees all the stats and her performance on the field, but she is an overall tremendous young woman. She gets great grades and provides outstanding leadership for this team. I feel very honored to have the privilege of coaching her.

Her performance this weekend is very evident of what she is capable of doing, Wright added. Your team can only follow when you have that kind of leadership.

She is reflective of what the program strives for. I think we are going to continue to get better and hopefully we are able to accomplish more and more each week of the season.

Named the Most Valuable Player of the 10th NFCA Leadoff Classic, she collected 18 total bases for a 1.500 slugging percentage. She hit four home runs in the first three games of the tournament and notched her fourth career multi home run game against No. 10 LSU. In addition, she also had three multiple RBI games and two multiple hit games, including a three-hit performance against Texas State and three RBI against the Tigers.

In the circle, she posted a 2-1 mark with a shutout and 26 strikeouts in 20.0 innings for a 0.70 ERA. She scattered 13 hits, yielded four runs (two earned), two walks, while opponents batted .176 against the right-handed workhorse. By recording 26 strikeouts last weekend, Southern needs just 21 strikeouts to become just the 19th Division I pitcher to reach the 1,100 career strikeout plateau.

The USA Softball National Player of the Week is designed to acknowledge outstanding athletic achievement by individuals on a weekly basis. Each recipient of the USA Softball National Player of the Week Award will receive an engraved plaque and will be national recognized for their accomplishments.
