DENVER Hawaii shortstop Joe Spiers and Louisiana Tech right-handed pitcher Ryan Rupert have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 7-13.
Spiers, a freshman from Moreno Valley, Calif. (Canyon Springs HS), hit .583 (7-for-12) in a three-game sweep of No. 3 Florida State. Spiers was 4-for-5 on Friday with three stolen bases and stole four more bases on Saturday. He scored a total of seven runs and stole seven bases in the series and was also walked three times.
It is Spiers first career WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Rainbow player this year.
Rupert, a junior from Houston (Blinn JC), threw a three-hit complete game shutout in Louisiana Techs 1-0 win over Nicholls State on Friday. He struck out 13 hitters and retired the last 11 men he faced. The 13 strikeouts are the most for a Bulldog pitcher in two seasons. He also threw a scoreless inning of relief against Mississippi State on Tuesday. For the week, he allowed five hits, three walks, no runs and struck out 14 in 10 innings of work.
It is Ruperts first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and first for a Bulldog player this year.
Other player of the week nominations included: freshman shortstop Christian Vitters, Fresno State; junior shortstop Robert Marcial, Nevada; sophomore second baseman Josh Rodriguez, Rice; and junior third baseman Nick Epidendio, San Jose State.
