DENVER Fresno State third baseman Beau Mills and San Jose State left-handed pitcher Branden Dewing have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 14-20.
Mills, a freshman from Visalia, Calif. (Golden West HS), hit .600 (9-for-15) in four games against Iona College. In Fridays doubleheader, he was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game and then was 5-for-5 with four RBI and six runs scored in the nightcap. For the week, he scored eight runs, drove in seven, stole a base and hit three doubles and two home runs.
It is Mills first career WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Bulldog player this year.
Dewing, a junior from Modesto, Calif. (Grace Davis HS), allowed just one run in a complete-game win over eighth-ranked Rice on Sunday afternoon. He gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out five Owls. The win was one of three for the Spartans against Rice, the first time the Owls were swept in a three-game WAC series in seven years.
It is Dewings first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and first for a Spartan player this year.
Other player of the week nominations included: junior second baseman Isaac Omura, Hawaii; junior third baseman Ryan Hamilton, Louisiana Tech; freshman second baseman David Ciarlo, Nevada; sophomore second baseman Josh Rodriguez, Rice; and senior shortstop Anthony Contreras, San Jose State.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: junior Doug Fister, Fresno State; senior Stephen Bryant, Hawaii; junior Steve Alverson, Louisiana Tech; sophomore Ryan Rodriguez, Nevada; and freshman Cole St. Clair, Rice.
