DENVER SMUs Lynsie Jones has been named the Western Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 29. This is her first honor of the spring.
Jones, a junior from Plano, Texas, won all of her matches last week in both singles and doubles. She was 2-0 at the No. 5 spot defeating Kimmie Lyles of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-0, 6-4 and Katherine Palider of UTEP 6-7, 6-2 (10-8). Against Marquette she moved up a spot to No. 4, but still won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Jones is now 10-5 overall in singles on the year. In doubles, she teamed with Svetlana Kouzmenko to go 3-0 last week, winning all three matches 8-6. The tandem improved to 14-5 overall on the year. SMU has won four-straight matches. Their win over UTEP on March 27 was their first against a WAC foe this season. SMU's record improved to 12-8.
OTHERS NOMINATED Fresno States Lucia Sainz picked up a match-clinching three-set win as Fresno State knocked off Long Beach State on March 26. The junior defeated Sandra Rocha 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2) at No. 3 singles to lift the Bulldogs to their fourth-straight ... Hawaiis Lauren Fitzgerald won two of three singles matches at the No. 1 spot last week. She leads the team with 15 singles wins this season.
